Filming Hunts

Hiring someone to film your hunt EXPENSIVE!!! Most charge $300+ a day to just to film and you will have to pay all travel expenses, for all meals, etc. I checked into several and found that it would cost me what amounted to $800-$1000 a day and that wasn't the kind of money I had to spend for that luxury.

Here are two examples:

I would pay a friend to come along with me and have them film the hunt. Offer them a lifetime adventure and a steak for supper as payment.

I'd bust up for a new compact HD camera ($1000 to $1500) and get a buddy familiar with it...make sure he's not "zoom happy".

Hey Guys....
Not to be a buzzkill but just make sure you have the proper permits... If you are going to sell the video I am pretty sure you need some sort of permit... If I am wrong let me know..

If you are hunting public lands and if your friend tags along to film and the footage is for you only (ie no commercial uses), then there isn't a fee. However if you were to pay your friend, buy him dinner, buy some batteries for him etc. then you need a permit from that particular FS or BLM district you are doing said activities on. Fees for these type of activities are 150.00/day plus you must be insured which is generally 1k+/- for liability insurance.

Shurely you've got a buddy who would love to come and spend a hunt with you on the Seargent. Spend the $200 at Walmart and get you a digital-8 camera.

There is really cheap (and easy) editing software that you could use put the raw footage together. If you were to decide to sell the rights to the footage to someone else later (for commercial use) it wouldn't retroactively require you to have had a permit to film yourself hunting (very similar to pornography I'd assume LOL )

Having said all that, I think too much is made of filming hunts and if you're not careful about it- the "footage" will take over the hunt and cheapen it or ruin it or at least distract you from what hunting's all about. just in MHO.

I again what to thank all my fellow MM members for all the help, keep it coming. This is why this site is so wonderful.I've learn so much from you guys. As far as a friend wanting to ride along for the hunt, I live in IL and all my friends are older, families, etc, and don't even know what the Sargents is,much less the importance and shear luck it is to draw this tag. I was telling my buddies when we were holding court at our favorite watering hole (Miss Kitty's) and your right, it is a Gentlemans Club (as I tell everyone that knows of it. "It's a Sh**t Hole but it's our Sh**t Hole". That it is hard to share talking hunting NM with them because no one gets it. When I tell people that I am hunting Elk in NM they say they didn't even know NM had Elk. They all think of CO for Elk,etc.Actually I didn't know of the great Elk hunting, etc. in NM until I booked a hunt with USO in 2004.Since then I've been lucky enough to draw a tag the last 4 years now. So I really only have you guys to share my hunts, ideas, thoughts, etc. So thanks to all.

Again Thanks

Well what ever you choose to do I hope you have a good hunt. That is a coveted tag and the bulls should be screaming there heads off. That hunt should make for some good memories granted you have someone that knows what there are doing. You'll find out real quick that putting a hunt on video is not as easy as it seems. I've been doing this for 10 years and have about 100 hunts on video and not one has been easy. If you do get a camera and do it your self get a mini-DV type 1.5 chip camera. This will give you better digital clarity than the high-8 camera. Try to use a tripod.

Have a good hunt,

I have a friend here in Montana who films hunts all over the world. He is incredible with filming and one of the most die hard hunters I've seen. His filming is really good and he has the ability to catch things that other videographers miss because of his knowledge of the animals. I'm not sure if he is booked or not but he could definatly point you in the right direction. He has had numerous episodes on the various outdoor channels over the years. His name is Tyler Johnerson give him a call @ 406-579-3810 or

You'll never regret filming a hunt especially when you memory begins to fade. It's awesome to look back at a hunt a relive it like it was yesterday. Bart

the min amount of insurance on NF land is 310K which would run about 300 bucks A 1 mil policy runs about 1k. hope this helps.

ELK777, no we are just going to shot some video ourselves due to the cost.

Thanks so much for your help though.
