A local group of gun rights supporters has passed the initial hurdle in an effort to recall state Sen. Angela Giron.
Victor Head said his group, Pueblo Freedom and Rights, won the Colorado Secretary of State Office's approval of its petition forms calling for Giron's recall.
Now Head has 60 days to collect up to 11,500 signatures from Pueblo and Pueblo West voters to trigger a recall election.
The group will target gun stores.
"All of the gun stores will be our main areas," Head said. "There will be petitions there so people can stop by and sign them."
He said the group also plans to have a booth set up during Saturday's Tanner Gun Show.
According to the petition: "Senator Giron has betrayed the trust of her constituents, her oath to uphold the Second Amendment and the rights of gun owners by voting yes on multiple gun control measures as chair of the Senate State Affairs Committee and in the general body of the Senate."
While Giron's affirmative votes on the state's recent gun control measures is the sole issue in the petition's language, Head
noted that people can sign for any reason they want.
After casting her vote, Giron argued the measures, which include limiting the number of rounds in magazines and requiring background checks on private gun sales and sales at gun shows, did nothing to prevent ownership of guns.
Head said his group began to coalesce during the open houses Giron hosted in January and February.
After failing to persuade Giron to vote against the measures, the petition work started, he said.
After the group submits its signatures, the state will have two months to verify them, then Gov. John Hickenlooper will have another 45 to 70 days to set an election, he said.
Head said the group has no candidate in mind to run against Giron, members just support her recall.
Giron said she was aware of the petition.
"I'm proud of the work I've done to create so many successes and opportunities for Pueblo. For these last weeks of the session, I'm focused on continuing to work hard for my community," she said.
Giron is one of four legislators targeted for recalls over gun issues. The others are Sen. John Morse of Colorado Springs, Rep. Mike McLachlan of Durango and Sen. Evie Hudak of Westminster, all Democrats.
