Howdy folks. I've just wrapped up the Texas antelope season and I got a big surprise while scouting. I had finished with an antelpoe hunter and my two brothers suggested we go scout for some mule deer bucks. We headed into some sand prairie country in the dark and hiked up onto a good hill that overlooked quite a bit of prairie.
After about an hour of glassing we had found quite a few muleys. My oldest brother said he could see a very big bodied deer far out on the prairie. I broke out the big glass and sure enough there was a very large buck out there but it was a whitetail. We watched him expecting he would travel to the river and disappear in some willows never to be seen again. To our surprise after an hour he laid down in some tall sage right out on the prairie. I sat there thinking. I thought about the wind. I thought about his exact bed. I looked at my two brothers and told them I was going to go kill this deer. Archery season was open and I had a crossbow down the hill in the buggy. I suited up in my camo and set out across the prairie. An hour and a half later I was ten yards from a giant deer sound asleep. I blasted a bolt into him and he exploded out of his bed and stood in front of me. He seemed totally surprised and unhurt. he started trotting off and at about 220 yards he stopped looked around and laid down. My brothers came off the hill and greeted me and all three of us went and retrieved him. He was even bigger than I thought. This is my biggest whitetail to date.
Here's some other nice pics.
