Latir vs Wheeler Peak

I know it is rough country, but I'm researching unit 53 for elk and deer, probably for archery season. Is Latir or Wheeler Peak wilderness better, or about the same ? How much game can one see, and what is average size ?

The deer can be giants in 53, but the elk are less than average. The two biggest deer I ever saw were up in 53 when I was on my BHS hunt. One was over 200" and the other was 190-200" and they were running together. We also saw several in the 160-180" range. Granted this was about 13 years ago. Went back a few years later for deer and never saw a thing worth shooting. If you go over towards Vallecito Mt (just this side of the pueblo)during the bow hunt you should find some. Rifle is a different story.

Never saw an elk that would be worth hauling out of that mess of downfall although we saw a lot. Biggest was maybe 300".

Wheeler...340" elk is achievable. Bigger if you get lucky. Good deer as well
