It is not always about killing. A lot of these guys just want to hold out and take the best animal available, and are willing to go home without an animal if that is the case. If they don't succeed, they do it again next year. I know it would be different for anyone of us if we could afford to purchase a permit every year, but for the average joe, we want to be sure to harvest an animal on our "once in a lifetime" hunt. I know on my archery hunt, it started out as I had to kill a bull, but by the end of the hunt, and after all the neat experiences I had during the hunt, I got to the point that even if I didn't kill a bull, I had just enjoyed 3 of the most wonderful weeks of my life. I did get lucky and take a great bull the final evening of the hunt to fulfull the dream, but I'm glad I got to enjoy to time leading up to the kill. It is great to have my elk mount to enjoy, but the memories are still what keeps me going back.
I would still love chasing bulls even if I hadn't killed one...
I know Doyle's return hunters are there for the love of hunting elk, not for the thrill of having to kill something...
And you know the guides are there for the love of chasing elk, as they don't get to shoot a bull, and still work their butts off, making sure the others are successful.
