NM unit 17, early archery

NM hit the credit card for a couple of elk tags so I'm trying to do some homework. It's not really going to be practical to make the necessary scouting trips because of the almost 1000 mile drive but we'll likely add a few days to our trip to get a grasp of the country, etc. Can anyone narrow down the unit to a few areas that we might want to check out, camping locations, expected hunting conditions, anything. Thanks in advance for any help that you can provide!

This can be dry country. Water holes may be great, unless it starts raining. Some days the bulls will be hot, the next they won't say a thing. Not much glassing to be done. Lots of timber. Most hunters stay near roads and camps. If you will get off the roads and find the water sources, you should get into elk. The elk are scattered, but there are some large bulls in there. Most of the country is fairly easy to walk. The elk seem to relate to the canyons. Good luck.
