Old Slides

I am digitalizing our family hunting album and have a question. I found about 100 of my Dad's old slides with him and his family from a backpack trip into the Beartooth Wilderness in the 1960s. I want to get them turned into .jpeg files. I went to Costco today and had them do a few to see how well they would come out. The quality is good enough, except most of the slides are square, and their slide scanning machine is rectangular, so she cut off the top and bottom of the slide. Normal people think, "Oh well, you are only missing feet and sky", but I guess I am not normal. I want to see what the mountains and sky look like. That helps determine where you are at in the photo and such. She said there was nothing she could do to get the whole slide. Does anyone have any suggestions for me on how I can get this done right?
Thanks,
