Restoring older sheds

Does anyone have any techniques that they've used to restore older antlers? I'm talking a few years old, nice and solid but white with a few cracks. I've heard that coating them with white latex paint prior to staining with shoe polish will seal up the cracks and provide a smooth base for the stain. Anyone tried this and/or any other methods?

Spackle works great. Just work it into all the cracks and let it dry. Then color the horns with whatever you like. I like using Minwax Colonial Walnut Wood Stain. I use a white floor wax to spread the stain on the antlers and it usually turns out pretty good...
