I never thought in a million years I'd do a review on savage rifles, let alone a positive review.
A guy that works for me purchased a savage rifle model 116 stainless composite chambered in a .270 WM. He's new to hunting and, to guns in general and asked if I'd help him mount his new leupold scope and get the gun dialed in. When he told me he bought a savage I kind of cringed, but I agreed to help him get started.
I was pretty impressed when we pulled the gun out of the box.It was not what I imagined. The action was precision machined, robust, polished, and mated perfectly with a durable well designed synethetic stock. One of the first things I noticed was the double trigger which is a great saftey feature. The biggest surprise came when we pulled the action and barrel out of the stock. Holy cow! This gun was built more like a custom rifle than a production rifle. This particular model has the accutrigger which allows for safe consumer trigger adjustments down to about 2.5 lbs. Even more impressive is the trigger breaks like glass. The stock is fitted with an aluminium bedding block which mates nicely with the action and barrel. Barrel is free floating in the stock as it should be.This morning we took it to the gun range for a test drive. We shot HSM factory ammo with 130 grain bergers at about 3060 fps. The results blew me away. Half inch groups at 100 yds, and even after the barrel got hot, we stacked 9 rounds under 1 inch.
I currently own a custom rifle with a match grade broughton barrel, jewel trigger, and stiller predator action. I have more money invested in this gun than I care to discuss. My points is, I know what goes into a precsion rifle and savage has adressed these features. I have also been a big fan of the Remington model 700's my whole life. Up until this morning, I thought Remington made the best production rifle on the market. It appears Savage is giving everyone in this industry, including custom gun makers, a run for their money. I would not hesitate to buy one of these rifles. I will be owning one in the very near future.I honestly can't think of anything savage missed while designing this rifle. Best of all, they cost around $700 and that is a bargin considering the features and accuracy this rifle produces.I can't speak for any of their other rifles because I have no experience with them, but as for the 116, it gets my vote. As a disclaimer, I have zero affiliation with Savage. Heck I don't even own one.......yet.
Anywho....thats my story and I'm sticking to it.
