True story time, BCB.
I was doing my USN thing and got stationed in Corpus Christi.
First weekend there, I went for a drive...44 miles south of the '4WD only' sign. Stopped, fired up the hibachi and shot at crabs with my .44.
Went for a swim, as far as I could go. Then ate my elk burgers. By this time it was dark, so i tried one more swim, until I couldn't touch bottom.
Came home, then had my first SAR flight over that same beach the next morning.
We dropped down to about treetop level and the copilot showed me a dozen or so reasons why not to swim at night, or anytime, that far out.
Tiger sharks.
Next weekend less than 3 miles from where I was, some dude caught a 9'er and a 10.5'er off the beach.
?Nothing in this world can take the place of persistence. Talent will not; nothing is more common than unsuccessful people with talent. Genius will not; unrewarded genius is almost a proverb. Education will not; the world is full of educated derelicts. Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent. "
