Spotting scope mid range

Want to get my teenage son a spotting scope but only have $500 range. I've got good optics just don't have the money to spend on him right now. Suggestion So?

Vortex Viper HD, Razor HD in the 50mm, or Endeavor.

If the Nikon ED50 in the classifieds is still available, you would be hard pressed to find something better for $400. Unbelievably light and compact and surprisingly good glass.
