Fairly new to MM, looking to hunt bivy style high in SW Colorado. Live in SE Utah, So I would be close enough to scout some during the summer. I have 2 NR points and after doing some initial research I am thinking GMU 71 and 75 might fit the bill, but I am open to other units as well. Anyone that would be willing to give me some general info such as info on the Lizard Head and Meminuche wilderness areas, hunter numbers, areas I might want to check out, etc. would be appreciated. Not looking for anyone's spot, but would like to be pointed in the right direction perhaps. Thanks in advance.

I'm not 100% certain but I believe the majority of the Lizard Head wilderness is in unit 70 which may be decent if you are packing in. 71/711 is south of there and from the looks of it has a decent amount of public land. I will probably try for the 71/711 tag which takes one point I believe. I don't think 70 requires any points. I don't know anything about hunter numbers though.

BE SURE TO KEEP IN MIND THAT MANY OF THE ARCHERY HUNTS THAT ARE HIGH COUNTRY/WILDERNESS AREAS REQUIRE NO POINTS FOR NON-RESIDENTS TO DRAW. THAT MEANS THAT YOU SHOULD PUT IN FOR A PREFERENCE POINT AS YOUR FIRST CHOICE AND THEN PUT IN FOR YOUR WILDERNESS/HIGH COUNTRY UNIT AS YOUR SECOND CHOICE. YOU WILL BUILD YOUR THIRD PREFERENCE POINT FOR NEXT YEAR AND WILL STILL MOST LIKELY DRAW YOUR HUNT THIS YEAR. NO NEED TO BURN YOUR PREFERENCE POINTS ON A HUNT THAT YOU COULD DRAW AS A SECOND CHOICE AND NOT BURN ANY POINTS. YOU CAN LOOK AT ALL THE ODDS OF DRAWAING EACH UNIT BASED ON YOUR BONUS POINTS BY GOING TO COLORADO'S HUNTING WEB SITE. IF YOU CALL THEIR OFFICE THEY CAN GUIDE YOU THERE. I AM LOOKING INTO DOING THAT VERY THING THIS YEAR AS WELL.

Lucky Shot nailed it. There are lots of high country hunts that you can draw as a second choice with no points. These are the same bucks that the rifle guys are burning 6-8 points on to hunt later in the year. You'd just be chasing them in their high summer range. The units you mentioned are good, but if there is another unit you have your sights on for the future, you could keep building points yet still have some good hunts while you wait.

According to the draw odds here at MM there is no chance to draw a archery tag as second choice for these units.
