We will be hunting 65 for third elk this year . It's about a 12 hour drive just to get to Grand Junction for us can anyone give us some travel tips looking for a pretty cheap motel for one night good places to eat not sure if we should push down to Montrose that first day or just stay in grand junction. Any other info would be apriciated as well. We are going to head in toward silver jack then look for a place to camp. Not bringing any quads just a wall tent and all the other crap that goes with it. I'm hoping the roads are holding up seems like CO has been getting snow a little earlier this year. Thanks for any help you can give..

Road are all good up there. There are some spots going over Owl Creek Pass that are snowpacked, but everything else is dry. A lot of the snow from those late September/early October storms is all gone.

If you're looking for "cheap" hotels for a night, you're probably better off with the selection in Grand Junction, hotels don't ever seem to be cheap around here (in Montrose), although I haven't looked at any prices lately.

The Motel 8 (Super 8 ??) near the Fruita exit isn't too bad, money wise. We stay there every year; close to the highways headed to Montrose and close to fuel/food.
