Looking for a little help in finding a better area to hunt that has a few more birds. The past few years I have been hunting the very eastern portion of the forest near dove creek. Seems like the overall numbers there are very low. It's really hit and miss, some years will see a couple birds and other years nothing at all.
My wife and I were just up there this weekend and didn't see or hear a thing in 3 days. Didn't see much sign either, a few fresh tracks was all. Put on a lot of miles too! I know the winter was pretty bad this year. Attempting to get my wife excited about turkey hunting, but she's becoming a little discouraged with the lack of activity.
Have spoken with the regional biologist out of Durango trying to get some info, but he claims it's good just about anywhere in SW Colorado.
Tried an area above Norwood (Divide Rd) a couple years ago on the Uncompahgre, but it was like the opener of deer season. Hunters on every ridge it seemed.
Not looking for any secret spots, just an area that may hold a few more birds so I can possible get my wife an opportunity at her first tom. We live in UT and try to make 2-3 trips each season.
Appreciate any help/info/advice.
Thanks a bunch.
