LAST EDITED ON Sep-29-08 AT 09:45PM (MST)[p] The hunt started off pretty good opening morning with a good 5 point bull within range not too far from the truck. From that day foward it was tough hunting as the bulls were not talking and the hot weather kept them in the trees. After a couple days of walking and glassing my brother in law Louie and his brother Ty finally located where the bulls were hanging out in a thick drainage, the next day it was on.
We headed to where we thought the bulls would be and just before light we spotted a bull with some cows. I got set up down from Ty and started to cow call and the bull drew closer, but the cows must have got a little jealous and directed the bull to the thick drainage we were headed for. We decided that we would get ahead of the elk around a knoll and get on top of them for an ambush. Just as soon as we topped the knoll we jumped a pretty nice six point bull. I thought the hunt was over for the day as the bull ran off scared everything around us. Just as soon as I thought that a bull screamed at us not more than a couple hundred yards away. We cow called and the bull sounded a little closer so I sat back and Ty got to a clearing were he thought the bull would make it too. The bull came within fifty yards and spooked but a couple more cow calls got him turned and coming back in for a perfect double lung shot at eighty yards that put the bull down.
Thanks Ty for letting me tag along as it was an experience I will not soon forget.
