Eddie, unless you are a regular (i.e. hundereds or thousands of posts) you won't get a whole lot of help here. While I'm a relative newbie here, I have rec'd some usefull advice [thx to the MM "regulars." Remember, everyone's not freely giving away their "secrets" unless there's something in it for them - i.e. cash, or other's "secrets."
Here's what I've been doing. I always split a subscription to the Huntin' Fool with a co-worker. The March edition will have top recommendations for Colorado. One thing you don't mention is if you have any bonus points you want to burn. Unit 44 was considered a top 10 Trophy Mule Deer unit last year and 61 did make the Huntin' Fools top 24 list. Both with take some bonus points - something like 3-5 bonus points. If you don't have the points, dream on or buy a landowner tag.
Right now I'm trying to decipher the 2004 draw/sucess data. I have downloaded 3 PDFs off the CDOW website:
drw_sum.pdf
hunt_recap.pdf
deer.pdf
Most of the good hunts, like are talking about are 100% 1st choice hunts - you have to use your bonus points to get. Right now I'm trying to build bonus points (only have a couple.) I'm looking for hunts in a fairly good area (close or adjacent to the primo units) that I have a reasonable chance of drawing as a 2nd or 3rd choice. Obvisously I'm not gonna tell which ones I'm looking at. Sorry about that.
I'd like to know how other's use this data in looking for a decent hunting opportunity. That is, if they'll share their general approach and not reveal "trade secrets" to the newbies.
