Just gearing up for the draws for UT. Wife has 18 moose points and just wanted to check in to see what people on here have seen for moose here in UT. Should she try a CWMU or a regular unit? Any help would be great since she only gets one moose hunt.

I sure with I had 1 more point! I'm setting at 17....

Thing is, 18 opens a ton more opportunity to draw than I have.

With 18, your wife has:
A 40% chance at a Wasatch tag,
A 50% chance at a North slope, three corners tag,
A 25% chance at a Cache tag,

OR 95% + at Ogden,Kamas,S Slope,Morgan S, or East canyon..

LOT's of options!

Personally, If I had 18, I'd take the Kamas tag a run!

Thanks goofyelk. I have never been in the mountains around kamas. I live on the wasatch unit so its very familiar to me. I have not seen any good bulls for a few years now. If you had the 18 points would you even think of putting in for a cwmu? Thanks

Plus one Goofyelk. Wife and son both have 17 also and just out of a couple good units. Hopefully in a few years they will have a moose hunt to go on!!!

NOPE, And I've looked into the CWMU's pretty hard! but that's me.

There are some good ones, but, one of the problems, they've cut tags
on those too...Most that had two tags last year have 1 for 2013.
NO BONUS Tag.....

On top that, I need a lots of room to roam, and time to hunt,
CWMU's just aren't my cup of tea..

I think you are right on your numbers. When I first read your post I thought you were saying the north slope summit would have a 50% chance. I could only wish that was the case. North slope summit is closer to 1 in 10.

It was just a couple of years ago when they were handing out 25 tags there. I have to wonder why they lowered the tags by so many. I have heard from the division that they think it is a disease, parasite, or a lack of vitamins. I have to wonder if it is wolves or over hunting.

I know the DWR is putting an extensive effort this winter testing
captured moose trying to get to the bottom of this problem..
I've heard both a vitamin definition disease and parasites
are thought to be the problem....

I just hope something can be done, if not, there's a lot of folks
in Utah with '15' or so moose points that will NEVER use them..

My dad is right at the top of the pool and keeps buying points. Just not convinced right now is the time unless we find the right CWMU. Taking a chance but at the same time he will eat his tag before shooting something small.

Yup...sitting on "15" myself.....

We camp on the north slope all summer and then hunt it in the fall and this year I saw only one bull that would be worth the bullet, and he was across the road from the grey gate going into manorlands. Didn't see any other good bulls the whole year, not sure if you would want to burn your points on this unit, seems to be hurting pretty bad.
