Hello all!
I just returned for a day from our 2007 elk hunt. So far it has had it's highs and lows. Yesterday was a high!! After hunting 14 solid days for my Mature bull, It finally happened. I had been sitting 2 different waterholes for most of that time. I had 2 mature bulls come in before yesterday. Lot's of cows, calves, and smaller bulls. I had set a goal to surpass my previous archery bulls and wanted to shoot a "big" one. I had 3 or 4 bulls in "my" area that would surpass my goals by a lot! Yesterday morning my Brother in Law Kevin and I were hunting together. We got into our Treestand at 6:20 am. We had elk under us by 6:30. Kevin made a move to shoot a cow and she busted out of there. After a few minutes we could here a good bull calling down the canyon 200-300 yards away. He did not seem to be moving as his bugles seemed to be in the same area for 15 minutes or so. I told Kevin to plug his ears as I ripped out 3-4 whiny cow calls as loud as I could. I paused about 5 minutes and repeated. After a 3rd time, the bull bugled much closer to us. Long story short, they came in. The bull was glunking and chuckling the whole way! I shot him at about 12 yards. He went about 50 yards and died. As he was trotting off, Kevin shot one of the cows. We ended up with 2 elk down in less than 1 minute! Needless to say, 10 hours of packing and we had them both back at camp! This was an incredible hunt that would not have been successful if not for some great friends and family. Thank you all! I could not have killed this bull without the support of my sweet wife who stayed home with my 3 kids while I hunted. She is awesome! I am heading back up till Friday to help my Bro and Dad and camp with my Wife and Kids. Good luck to you all in your hunts and be safe! Have a great day!
