I know that the deer started to drop their antlers. When is the prime time for bucks (3pt or 4pt) to start dropping antlers?

When is the prime time for elk (5pt and 6pt bulls)?

WM: Antler dropping varies by region and species, and to some extent, the general health of the animals. For example, whitetails can start dumping antler the second week of December, especially in eastern states. They won't dump until late January or February though in places like south Texas.

Muleys in northern climes typically shed in February, though you'll see local populations that consistently drop in mid-late January. It is not uncommon to see bucks still packing headgear into March.

Elk typically drop latest of all the species. For years in Colorado and Wyoming we never even bothered to go out until the 2nd week of April because all we'd find were bulls wearing antler still, though it's not a bad thing to be scouting and figuring out where you need to look when the time comes. I've discovered many other areas where you will see some bulls dumping much earlier than April.

Again, there's a lot of variation among regions, so your best bet is to get out and watch the animals in your area and keep notes on what you see and the dates. You'll get the timing figured out.
