I know I will take the heat but I am home with my sick twins so I have been watching hunting shows all day. I see a ad for a trail cam with "Professional(guys who pay others to take them hunting)" talking about how all the PROS need a trail cam, then comes the "when you can't waste time in the field" line. I was shocked, enough that the next time I saw it I listened more closely. I sure am glad that time spent scouting, is "wasted" time in the field. Sure am glad I am NOT a pro if this is the current school of thought.

Hunting shows in general SUCK!!! I have never seen a bigger bunch of totally inept, clueless, worthless sportsmen, than all the PROFESSIONAL HUNTERS out there. I watch Eastmans, On your own, and some local shows weelky, and if I see them in the west occasionally, but this is the first I have spent the day watching. We as sportsman, with these CLOWNS out in public representing us look WORSE than the picture PETA et al paint of us. I REALLY can't tell the difference between cattle farming and whitetail hunting, and to my shock, on Hollywood Hunter, I now see this is spreading to mulies. I was really taken aback to just how horrible hunting and hunters look on these shows. According to the "PROS", if you don't have trail cams, watching your food plots, and your range finders, to help you shoot 1000+ yrds, in you scent free clothes, you just can't hunt. Infomericals are more believable.

I have the best proposal for a new show. Take Micheal Wadell, Lee and Tiffany, Tom Miranda, Jackie Bushman, THE PIG MAN, "The everything wild clowns", Hollywood Hunter, and a few others. Give them a ruger m-77, .270 with a normal everyday 3x9 stock, some plain jane binos, and walmart camo. Drop them in any national forest to hunt deer, elk, whatever, no guides, no trail cams, no laptops, no GPS. Give them a week. First see who is still alive(i bet lee kills tiffany). Who is not lost. Who saw any game animal. Who saw the animal they are hunting. Who could do anything with that animal(shoot it, gut it, bone it, etc.). This would be a GREAT SHOW. If your a PROFESSIONAL, you would have no problem, my bet, after 2 days all the "PROFESSIONALS" would need the search and rescue!

When they came for the road hunters I was not one so I said nothing. When they came for the oppurtunists I was not one so I said nothing. When they came for the public land hunters I was not one so I said nothing. When they came for me there was no one left to say anything!

THE REALITY OF HUNTING: ...... HUNTING IS A FREE STYLE SPORT, AND COMES IN MANY DIFFERENT FORMS DUE TO DIFFERENT ANIMALS HUNTED, WEAPON, LOCATION, WEATHER, TOPOGRAPHY, TRADITIONS, JUST TO NAME A FEW FACTORS. I AM GLAD TO SEE WE CAN ALL CHOOSE OUR OWN STYLE OF THE HUNTING PURSUIT WITH OUT BEING HAMMERED FOR IT. (OR AT LEAST WE SHOULD BE).

IF THOSE EASTERN BOYS WANT TO SLING CORN, GROW FOOD PLOTS,& SET UP IN A TREE ALL DAY.......SO BE IT.............YD.

Saw a show the other day where they were hunting "CUZE" deer. I realize the descriptions of programs are probably done by the program provider, but c'mon. I only watch a handful of hunting shows anymore. Sick of food plots, decals on guns and the other shameless plugs for sponsors. YD is right though. But at least we can change the channel. mtmuley

LAST EDITED ON Jul-26-12 AT 05:39PM (MST)[p]I'm pretty much with ya on this one hossblur, but please leave my cute little Tiffany off the list, LOL!

I hear ya hoss, but out of the pros you listed I think Tom Miranda would be just fine under the conditions you listed

LAST EDITED ON Jul-26-12 AT 08:03PM (MST)[p]My wife thinks i waste to much time in the field maybe she'll allow me to get a bunch of trail cams and have them linked up to my smart phone all so I could spend more time with her. But I do think the hollywood hunters are getting old and couldn't hunt up a feral hog in a confinement.

"Courage is being scared to death but saddling up anyway."

No tailchaser, I tried that route when my wife gave me the, "your obsessed and need to spend more time at home." line. I bought a bunch of cameras and had up to 40 of them but would only use about 12 of them at the most at a time.....I've sold all but 10 of them because I'd rather be "obsessed" and "waste time" in the field like the rest of our brothers and sisters who are just trying to enjoy something we love.

I saw a show once where Ted Nugent shoots a doe from a tree stand, and you can see the high fence through the trees no matter what angle the camera was at.

And to top it off he was in full camo with face paint on. How lame can you get.

I think Ted is flying a banner on this sight promoting his new ammo.

He should carry 2 classifications of ammo: LARGE ENCLOSURE LOADS and SMALL ENCLOSURE LOADS.

Klbzdad, 40? Are you kidding me? And you're still married? You bess be hanging on to that girl! And you better be shooting a weatherby and not savage or marlin. :)

"Courage is being scared to death but saddling up anyway."

LAST EDITED ON Jul-26-12 AT 10:48PM (MST)[p] CASTN SHOOT.......I AGREE !!!! I THINK TED SHOULD DISMOUNT FROM HIS HIGH HORSE, AND LAY LOW FOR A FEW YEARS. HE IS ABOUT ONE MORE VIOLATION FROM MAKING OUR HUNTING COMMUNITY LOOK REALLY LAME..................YD.

Hoss buddy! That really made me laugh! You are pretty much spot on with that. Although I have to say that whitetail hunting is NOT what those guys paint the picture of. Yes it is pretty much stand hunting aside from a few situations where you can spot and stalk them but there are not steroid fed, and all the horn growth fed bucks running around. The whitetail hunts I've been on have been pretty tough, colder than hell, hunts. "Lee would kill Tiffany"...lmao! I bet that hunt wouldn't last 10 minutes.

It's always an adventure!!!

Haha great write up! I've always wondered how many of the top strip outfitters would be at the top without trail cams. Seems like all it takes nowadays to be a top outfitter is 50+ cams and a website!

I just call em as I see em!

The strip outfitter comment is spot on, unfortunately.

OK I know I am going to get beat up for this but I will say it anyway. Shooting big whitetails is far from easy. I have hunted out west a little (hoping to do even more) and hunted whitetails on everything from public ground to private ground managed for wilflife. The primary reason elk and mule deer out west are hard to hunt has more to do with getting a decent tag and being in physical condition to tackle the terrain. Frankly, from my experiences elk and mule deer are not near as wary as big whitetail bucks but they do come with their own unique set of challenges. Hunting shows are ridiculous and I have not watched one start to finish in years (I do watch some of the 'homemade' one on the internet.

I would be very impressed if within the next two hunting season you could take a 150" plus whitetail with your bow even on a guided hunt. I woudl love to see the biggest whitetail you have taken.

I wish someone would do a hunting show where a company pays a camera crew to travel the states and beyond to film hunts with anyone who has a good hunt to offer up (rich, poor, private public,etc.). If hunter x drew a great tag out west the crew joins them on their hunt or if hunter y has a great hunt close to home they do every year and just wants to let us all come along the camera crew joins them. It would be fun to be able to just see hunts there were going to happen with or without the TV exposure versus hunts that are arranged to satisfy the need to get a kill on film.

Teddy Roosevelt had an opinion on hunting whitetails:

"...and so, though to kill a white-tail is rather more difficult than to kill a black-tail [mule deer], yet the chase of the latter is certainly the nobler form of sport, for it calls into play, and either develops or implies the presence of, much more manly qualities than does the other."

;-)

I have nothing against whitetails or hunting them. I just can't believe that guys spend diesel dragging around discs to plant deer food plots, and go to the lengths they go to "hunt" whitetails.

As for Tom Miranda, maybe he would be the best off. Finished the night off watching a elk hunt, guided in which they killed some little willow horned elk. For what elk hunts cost, I can't believe they paid for that.

Man I forgot the decals on the guns, when the HELL did hunting become NASCAR? And I love NASCAR.

I haven't hunted whitetails, but if I watch the hunting shows it looks like I sit in a Tough Shed, on a platform(dressed in camo, which I don't get if your inside) sitting on a food plot during the rut.
And for you whitetail guys, in the west we don't have elk herds in the 100's wandering around out in meadows letting you count hairs on there backs. If you are hunting over the counter, you will be pretty lucky to get 5 seconds to see that bull.
Also, 200" mule deer don't walk down the road and wait for you to get your fat azz out of the truck(to walk off the road) to shoot it. In general, most of us don't have to drag the deer off the road to gut it.

There are some good shows, the best being On Your Own Adventures. I think MeatEater is probably right up there, and because I am a western guy I like Eastmans(yeah they have started to get pretty soft and needing to be lead around by the hand too), but the vast majority flat out blow. They are as predictable as porn, with musicality which is about the same. In fact I am thinking of putting porn sounds to hunting shows. Don't mean to be so damn negetive, but I truly was amazed at how damn lame 99% of these shows are!

I have to agree, most hunting shows do not send a good message. I understand why antis don't like hunting if they watch most hunting shows.

I understand why alot of shows show tree stand/food plot hunts however, it's easy to get the kill on tape. That's not my style of hunting, I probably wouldn't hunt if thats what I had to do.

If there had been a camera man with for the last thirty years there may be only a few hunts where the kill shot would have been captured. I certainly wouldn't wait for the camera man to tell me when I can shoot. But thats what you have to do if you want to get the "money shot".

For me hunting isn't all about killing, and time in the woods is never wasted time.

I couldn't agree more with this thread. I love "wasting time" in the field. Especially with my 7 year old son and my brother. They are my hunting/scouting partners and we all love it. I couldn't think of a better way to spend an August morning than sitting on the side of a mountain with my son and both of us behind our binos. Love it.

Let those easterners plant their food plots and sit up in a tree all day waiting for a GLIMPSE of a deer, I will take an open basin with trees and rock ledges all day.

As far as the hunting shows go, I only watch OYOA because he seems to appeal to us (averge joe hunters) more than any other show. No BS product plugs from Randy. Just hunting. Especially when I see him in the same areas I hunt (he had a Nevada 065 deer tag on last season).

Just my opinions.....

So Hoss?

You just noticed this?

I've got Wild Honey Tree's and Crazy Little Weeds growin around my Shack!
These Dusty Roads ain't streets of gold but I'm happy right where I'm at!
All these Perty little Western Belles are a Country Boys Dream!
They ain't got Wings or MM Halo's but they sure look good to me!

big whitetails more wary then a big mule deer! bahaha! whitetails pattern use the same trail same everything and can set a watch to them most of the time. a big mature muley is probably the hardest animal in the world to kill! they are so smart and wary they don pattern etc! i cant believe anyone would say a WT is harder to kill then a MD. a 150 WT is about equivalent to a 180 MD lets see you kill a 180 MD public land general diy hunt IOWAN!

I am not sure I can but I sure look forward to trying. My hunts out west so far have been pretty productive on public land and I am not sure I can say they were DIY because I had help from a lot of good people but none of them were paid guides. In other words, I accept your challenge and agree to go mule deer hunting at my next earliest convenience (OK I was going to anyway).

how do you think most of these BIG BUCKS are taken out here in the west now days. i know several supposed to be "big eithecal hunters" sittin on APPLES HAY and CORN. you ought here there stories.650 yd shot. some are even hauling there own water.

The big game board needs to make it illegal to bait MULE DEER.
we need to get this passed.

I don't know what this one would score. I shot him on public land on a DIY hunt in Montana. The only help I had was a map. I have shot several mature Mule Deer, and in my opinion a 180 Mule deer is by far harder to come by.

Well, like I said I have twins, and a 6 yr old and a job, and a life so I haven't ever really sat and watched a whole day. Usually if I see whitetails or turkeys I change it. And if I see anything about long range "hunting" I change it, long range and hunting are polar opposites. In short, yeah I guess I did just notice it.
