Youth elk hunt

My son just turned 12 and has a unit 3/301 2nd season cow tag and from the looks of it , the weather is going to cooperate. I keep hearing that some of the ranches in the Craig area will let the youth hunters hunt their ranch during the late season . Has anyone taken a youth hunter on any of these ranches ?

Seeing how he is a youth. The tag is good also for the later seasons,see special youth regulations. I would wait and go in Dec when there is not as much pressure/better experience.

There is a far greater chance of elk being in those units in December. There a few earlier but very few,

If you can hunt unit wide in December you will not need private access. It will just be a matter of finding the right group in the right place. You can call around and see… Some guys used to allow youth, but everything has gotten tighter for everyone. Where they used to allow hunters late they are trying to make a little extra because fuel is $5 a gallon etc.

Some may still allow but the outfitter business is feeling the same crunch everyone else is and given the current economy etc. it might be smart to have a small offering in exchange…

The later in December usually the better the hunting. Big herds - get him out shooting and practicing. We used to wait until after Christmas and go the last few days of the month - Momma enjoyed a few days to her self after Christmas.

Seriously though, get him practicing as it can be pretty rattling for 12 year old or any new shooter to get into a large herd of nervous elk in knee or waist deep snow.
