I was lucky enough to finally draw my deer tag in 67 and also a bull tag in a different unit of Colorado. If I could get some help from you fine people I would really appreciate it. If I do this deer hunt on my own, I could use some tips on how to field judge a trophy buck that's worthy of 7 preference points. I know about good deep forks but what is the best way to judge the spread of the Rack? How wide are the ears on a good buck, 20-22 inches?
Does anyone have any tips on how to hunt this area during Nov 4 ?Nov 10? I would like to get to the hunt area early and do a lot of scouting but since I also drew the bull tag I don't know if I will have the time.
Does anyone know a good local citizen/guide who might be interested in hunting with me for a few days? E-mails would be fine. Thanks, Ken Engel

What Elk tag did you draw?Just a thought if its not a premier tag why not send it back and get the refund and spend all your time on getting a trophy deer?If you used a lot of points on the elk tag this may not be an option.Thats my worst nightmare drawing to many tags and not enough time to hunt.

YES, the elk tag may have to go but I really hate to do that. I feel once you draw a tag you should always try to use it. Also the elk hunt is with close friends and I think it would be awhile before we could all get together again. Ken

Close friends would understand a 7 year wait on a trophy deer tag over a general season bull tag, If he don't you just might have to find another friend, Me I wouldn't screw around with that tag it would be the deer hunt all the way, Maybe you can tell your friend, you will come up for his Elk hunt for a couple of days before you head out to your deer hunt.

If you've waited 9 years, (since 97) to draw a good tag, make the most of it. I agree with gator. I would talk to everyone I could that has hunted that unit/season and get there 5 days early to scout. The 3rd season can vary greatly from year to year depending on the weather. When you hear success stories, always ask what the weather was like.

Because I'm always positive, we'll have cold weather w/some snow. Migration/rut, it doesn't get any better. Good luck.
