I'll be going on my first muledeer outing this fall!!! Anyone have any helpful hints or advice on hunting the Glaicer peak wilderness in september. Thanks!! CD

If you are trying for something better than a camp pet 3x3, get in shape, pack way in and hunt the spots that no one in their right mind would even consider hunting. Good bucks will be in the meadows but the trophies will be harder to get to. Be prepared to bone-it-out and start pack'n. Good Luck

I don't have any information on that specific area but it is exciting to know September is not that far off. Not that I'm wishing the summer away. Are you back packing or are you using horses? We're going into the Entiat and doing a drop camp with Icicle Outfitters and like you, we are also anticipating our hunt. A couple of years ago my brother, my youngest son and I backpacked into the paysayten wilderness. It was a lot of work but also a lot of fun. We got some great video. We hit all kinds of weather consisting of 70 degree afternoons to 6 inches of snow all in a four day trip.

Backpacking is a lot of fun but as I said, much of our time was spent doing camp chores and we burnt up a lot of energy just getting into our area and getting out. We each had 55 lb packs and my son had about 40 lbs. That's really why we made the decision to go in via horses this year and stay in a roomy wall tent with a wood stove for heat. The dome tent we used on our backpack trip was tight quarters with three guys and wet gear. Also, we can take 150 lbs. of gear per person on our drop camp not counting the tent and stove. we should have more energy for the hunt and be pretty comfortable at the same time.....

Congrats on that Eberlstock! Sounds like your going to have a nice set-up. Anticipating and gearing up and planning for such a hunt is really half of the fun, isn't it?

I am also in the "getting in shape mode." Preparing for a hunt is a great motivator.

I hunted it last year. I would bring the best optics you can afford. Also if you are backpacking in I would buy a Tarptent. The 3 man weighs 2.5 pounds. We use 1 for every 2 guys. I also like to have a Noahs tarp made by Kelty to cook under if its raining and to put all the food under and stuff like that. You should also use hiking sticks. Also I like to use a scalpel for cutting up the deer cause they don't weigh anything and just change the blade to sharpen it. It also works way better than any knife for caping out the head. Good luck with your hunt.

Where is everyone going in at so I can stay away from everybody?

I'm headed in with Icicle as well, should be a great hunt hopefully we'll all have some great pics in the fall.

During the high hunt I've found boot tracks in country I wouldn't expect to see anyone, I don't think that there is much country that gets overlooked up there in September, maybe in the Alpine but definately not the GPW.

You guys going in with Icicle Outfitters are going to be in for the hunt and experience of your life!!! Im jealous. Hopefully next year i will be riding in with Icicle myself. I have got to hear all the details when you get back, get ready to hunt some awesome country and bring home a couple dandy bucks!!!

Dose anyone have any thoughts on sleeping bags? I need a light weigh bag for this high hunt. What temp should it be rated for? Is it possible to get a quality lightweigh bag for under a 100.00?

The high buck hunt is a great time to be in the mountains. Make sure you have a bear tag! Like Ridge said, most of the area will see hunting pressure. It's pretty tough to find a place to yourself, I've tried. Even on remote no trail mountains there still always seems to be another guy. Between the pressure and shedding their velvet most of the truly large bucks will be brushed up. A legal buck is a reasonable goal but expect to seriously work for a trophy...

As far as sleeping bags go... I would not worry about a below zero bag. If you are sleeping in a wall tent with a stove a light weight 25 degree bag will do fine. Try to avoid mummy bags. I find that I get cramps from not being able to stretch my legs out after a long day of hiking. MAke sure it is long enough to cover your head.

I'm headin back up the Alpine. I killed a small 4X3 in there last year. I gave up my spot to another guy and his 12 year old son. His son killed a great non typical at 100 yards opening morning. Shoulda been mine :( Oh well, this year!

Oh...he was just a dink. I did not take photos of him but my buddy did. I still have not seen them even though he said he processed them. I took him because I had Alberta coming up and I had not packed any animals on my horses yet. So, it was kind of a test for them to see how they'd handle it...They passed. There was another one with mine, the same size we let him walk. He did have really dark horns and was already getting gnarley bases. I'll try to get em and post a few. Rained like hell on us up there and a lot of ground hornets played hell on us and the horses. But still a good time and one of my favorite places to be.

Mike, you get lucky and miss out on a snowstorm last year? That aint no fun! lol I'm going archery this year (actually just about to head out the door to go fling some arrows with my buddy) so no early highcountry hunts for me. It's alright though, my school don't start till Sept. 18 so I got 18 days to myself to go stick a legal buck! Good luck on the highhunt boys!

Hey MichaelJ! Thought you died or something. You can still hunt the High Hunt with a bow....or are you afraid of the snow. No snow last year but lotsa rain and ground hornets. It was ugly for bees. Saw my life flash before my eyes three times on horseback on the pack in alone. You are welcome to come with us, of course, if you want. Will be in the Alpine.

I am not afraid of the snow! lol okay maybe a little. What dates are you going? I might be able to swing it.
You still grazing the horses or are you hauling in a bag or two of feed? I know the Timothy Hay Pellets work out good for high country horse food. I'll PM you in the next week or so and get some details. Thanks

After 7 consecutive seasons in the high hunt I learned one thing. Prepare for the wet slippery snow. We got it six out of seven years. Not evey day, but at least one or two days. Bring good waterproof boots with aggresive traction. Bring an extra pair you can alternate drying out. Bring a liteweight pair also. I know it helped salvage more than one hunt for me. The steep terrain up there is nothing to mess around with. Also a wrist rocket for grouse can be a lot of fun and very quiet. It goes without saying that you can expect fog also. Bring defogger for your optics or at least a pocket full of facial tissues in a waterproof container.Never leave camp without your compass and essentials. You will be hooked on the high country, theres nothing else like it. Good luck

Hey guys i have never done this hunt, always thought about it, but my dad or grandpa never did the high hunt, so i was never blessed with growning up doing it. But i am very curious. I was wondering if any of you guys could post up some pictures from your previous trips, of scenary, live animals, animals you have taken. I would really love to check that out. Thanks.

Garrett

ditto, please anybody got hgh country pics? I've been surfing the web-daily for some. This will be my first year!! I'm asking questions daily and training. Might even get me a plane ride over there so I can see it. CD

LAST EDITED ON Jun-30-06 AT 08:13AM (MST)[p]Most of mine are all on 35mm and my scanner needs a new cable. But I'll see what I can do. Mostly scenery. Have only killed one buck on the high hunt. Everything else, general season.

Mike

I have some photos of scenery and stuff but I am not sure how to upload them. So if somebody would post them I would email them to that person. DT

I've got a pic of my last high hunt buck I'll post if someone will do it for me.

Those pics are amazing!!!! What a beautiful place to hunt for deer. How far in there is that. Is taht about as far as you can get?? I love it, so gorgeous.

thank you soooo much for posting up some pictures!!!

Garrett, You can easily backpack into the Chiwawa Basin easy 6.5 miles, Boulder Basin 7 miles, Indian Creek (Papoose CreeK)8 miles or join the crowd at Spider Meadows 5 miles. All of these are pretty easy to backpack into and offer some good country. We will not have any camps in those spots. Good luck and have fun.

P.S. We enjoyed seeing the photo of you and your big buck in the wdfw game pamphlet. Good Luck in 06.

Ask and ye shall recieve... Some of you will recognize some of these pictures...(these were from a mid august scouting day trip).

Gotta be Glacier Peaks! Pretty amazing country up there fo sure. MJ....you guys heading back up there this year?

Yeah it's the GPW! We actually saw quite a bit of fern (high annual rainfall) on the hike in so I think we got lucky and hit it with some clear weather. Sure was pretty up there!

I don't think we're heading back in there. I switched to Archery this year because my school doesn't start till the 18th of September so I'll have nearly the first 3 weeks of archery to hunt as much as I can. I plan on hiking my ass way back into the Tyee Mtn area.
I'm deffinately hoping my Dad draws a tag this year though. I sure want to see him put a nice Muley on the ground before I graduate and leave for the Military.

sorry, I dont know anything but i was wondering if anybody could help me out on where to hunt in palouse because i drew a whitetail deer tag and i dont know the area. Some info would be nice. Thanks!

LittleHunter, first off welcome to the site!! You might want to start a new thread with a title like; "Drew XXX tag and need advice..." But tagging a question like that onto the end of a not so active thread probably won't get you much results.
