Colo. Blaze Orange

After reading the latest issue of the Eastman's Journal, I wonder if anybody even reads the laws and regulations regarding blaze orange requirements in this state. Those guys in the feature stories didn't have a stitch of it on in any of the photos.

I guess if the DOW made it a 20 point violation like trespassing, there might be more compliance.

But to be fair to the hunter, we weren't there. Maybe he thinks he looks like a dork in Blaze Orange and decided to take it off after the kill for photos.

Also, in my photo that was on the cover of Trophy Hunter, I had no Blaze Orange on (below). WHY? Because the photos were taken the next day and we were sitting 5 feet from the camp trailer.

Without being there, it's hard to say what the circumstances are. I've never paid much attention, but I don't think I have seen that many hunters in Colorado out hunting who weren't wearing orange. I could be wrong though.

If you accidentally shoot one of those guys, then maybe they'll start wearing their orange. With all the hunters over, some who are real "Different" I wouldn't dare not wear orange!!!!
A guy could be risking it even when sitting in camp!

Yeh, and they carry extra camo ballcaps with them in the field and take the orange off for every picture.

Whats even more stupid is when some of these hunting programs actually show hunters without blaze orange on banging away at game on camera. Last year I saw a Christenson arms program with a guy in an orange color(not daylight flourescent orange) Old Navy Sweatshirt and a dark ball cap actually shoot a deer on camera in the Gunnison basin.

I guess even more unnerving is the fact that a grown man had an Old Navy sweatshirt. Think he had Guess jeans and some Abercrombie and Fitch socks on too? Maybe some CK underwear?

I remember when I first saw that kill photo with that gang-banger backwards hat I thought "Holy-crap, one of the 'New Kids On the Block' killed a big buck and is on the cover of Trophy Hunter!"

I see a few guys every year without any blaze on creeping around the hills. One guy in particular was on private land that didn't allow hunting. Its two years in a row I have seen what I suspect to be the same person in the same spot.

I am not implying that these guys in Eastmans were intentionally breaking the law and quite possibly they did take it off for the photo or just didn't realize you needed it for HCB hunts.

Its a silly law at times because the muzzleloaders and HCB hunters are required to have it on but archers hunting on the same mountain at the same time can be full camo.

LOL Buckspy!! You should see me sing and dance!!!

I think the Blaze Orange stuff is like seatbelt laws. They're put in place to protect both parties. Not only to protect the guy who doesn't wear the orange, but also the guy who might accidentally shoot him. I would feel horrible if I accidentally killed someone.

Your exactly right Mike. This year when my son is in the field with me he will be wearing blaze from head to toe.

this deer was taken in washington. my buddy was wearing orange, , he just took it off for the pix...same deal. just outside of camp spot
people do it for the pic's.
sure there are some lawbrakers out there.

LAST EDITED ON Aug-04-06 AT 04:34PM (MST)[p]Founder- you are wearing orange in that pic. That bill-less farmers mesh looks orange to me. Although the pose doesn't do much for Utahns' image. haha

Come on, I look good!!! LOL Best cover shot of all Trophy Hunter Mags!

Didn't we have a long post awhile back where the "ethics police" were saying how tacky people looked posing in their hunter orange? Now you are questioning when it's not there?

Sheesh, it's been a long off-season!:)

Steve

I wouldn' say obeying the law and wearing blaze orange is tacky. Now, I would say 6 grown men standing around a dead animal all wearing the same matching camo oufits seems "tacky".
Especially when its some of the new "sage" type camo that looks like it would blend better with a honey locust tree in Aunt Ethel's backyard than real sagebrush.

JUDAS PRIEST!!!

THATS VERY UNETHICAL!!!

TO WEAR HUNTER ORANGE DURING A PICTURE WOULD BE KNOWN AS A SLOB HUNTER!!!

IN 2002 I WAS IN AN L.E. UNIT DURING BIG STINKY IN THE RUT BULL SEASON!!!

I MET 13 OF THE 15 PERMIT HOLDERS!!!

12 OF THE THIRTEEN WERE NEVER SEEN WITH HUNTER ORANGE ON & I DID SEE THEM IN THE FIELD FULL CAMO!!!

STEALTHY AS IT GETS!!!

THE ONLY ORANGE I SAW WAS A DRUNK THAT WAS ROAD HUNTING & HE WAS WEARING HIS HUNTER ORANGE & DRINKING COLD BREWSKIES!!!

SO!!!

IF & WHEN UPON I EVER PULL THE L.E. PERMIT DO I WEAR MY CAMO???

OR DO I WEAR MY HUNTER ORANGE???

THEY DON'T ALWAYS TAKE THEIR HUNTER ORANGE OFF JUST FOR THE PICTURES!!!

DON'T LET FOUNDER BULL$HIT YOU ON THAT BUCK,I'LL BET HE WAS SO STEALTHY HE COULDN'T EVEN SEE HIS OWN SHADOW,LOL!!!

THE ONLY bobcat OPEN TO SUGGESTIONS,SHOULD I DO WHAT OTHER HUNTERS DO OR SHOULD I PUT MY ORANGE ON & GIVE THE ANIMAL THE EDGE???

RE: JUDAS PRIEST!!!

Buckspy,
I've noticed the same thing, and it's usually in magazine stories or on Fat Redneck Outdoors on OLN. I think a lot of these guys believe that the law doesn't apply on private property. When I was doing work for the DOW, I'd say the majority of the blaze orange violations I saw written were on private property. Of course, a few of those folks received trespassing violations, too. ;)

RE: JUDAS PRIEST!!!

Hunter orange is not required in Kali! That's because we are all safe, sane, and sober!

Bobcat, wear blaze orange in camo pattern. Just don't wear it for the pic. Besides, with a .50 you don't have to get that close!

Steve

RE: JUDAS PRIEST!!!

I know I've taken pics with blaze orange on, and will from now on remember to take it off the next time. It just didn;t look right for the trophy pic. I will wear it when out hunting and mandatory though. Heck I even wear it going to the store! (hat)

Abercrombie! LOL

Nice buck again Brian. I had forgotten about that second pic.

We know what you mean but you yourself were in a video where your hunting partner had no blaze orange on....HMMMMM
Guess he did carry an extra camo cap and camo cloths as well?
Best,
Jerry

HMMMMM....Good observations Jerry. My hunting partner had already tagged his buck and his season was over. Technically he was done hunting and was not required to wear it by law. Since he is a big boy I didn't feel it was my place to tell him to wear orange just to tag along with me and spot.

Let me say also that my partner's hunting ethics are above reproach and he is very insistant about abiding to game laws and hunting regulations and would never intentionally violate them.
He is a class act.

One of the questions I always ask my friends before we leave the truck or camp is "Got your orange?"

Watch "Utah's raging Bulls" video, it is full of special people who don't wear hunter orange. It even had some disclaimer at the end of it.

Just wanted to point out that the same thing your pointing out was seen in your video as well.
You were wearing your orange when you went to your buck and your friend was not when he was with his.
No false conclusions here Mike.... I am sure someone would not be crazy enough to film themself with a 190" buck without the proper legal requirements and posssibly put themselves in question.
Was a great video BTW.
Best,
Jerry

Legal or not, tag filled or not, with all the people that hunt where I do in Wyoming, Utah, & Colorado, I wouldn't DARE not wear orange.
Some of the folks I've meet, scare me! I might even get one of those full body suits, something that will blind people when they look at my pictures!!!! Just a big orange blob---and a deer.

Brian L.,

In Utah I don't think it makes any difference how much ORANGE you have on, you could be covered from head to toe with new bright Fluorescent Orange gear on and some of those "idiots" will still shoot right over your head at a fleeing poor little "spike or forkie" that you are willing to let escape to grow up. Happened to us on two differnt hunts when we were there in 2000.

In COLORADO isn't the Camo Orange illegal? Seen a number of hunters wearing it before.

Brian

I only wear mine when I'm hunting with Brian...Seriously though, I have had to threaten one of my hunters on a UT hunt to either put it on or we're going back to camp. Steve

Just as an interesting story concerning florescent orange clothing.....I was on one of my California antelope hunts and about the fourth day we were in camp about noon when this rig pulls up. It was a man and woman and they both had the brightest florescent orange high gloss coveralls, complete with hats I have ever seen! And the woman had red tennis shoes! My buddy put his sun glasses on! They got out and walked into camp and asked if we'd seen any antelope. We told them we'd seen about 20 bucks or so but nothing we wanted to shoot. He said they had been hunting the whole season and hadn't seen even one antelope. I told him there was a pretty nice buck bedded down with some does not too far from camp if he was interested. Boy was he! I told them "let's walk from here, it's just over the rise." To make a long story short he made a nice shot on about a 12" goat. My buddy even packed it out to the road for them. We offered to skin it but they were taking it to the locker. Somewhere I have a picture of them in their orange coveralls, and man is it bright!

Steve

Steve!!!

YA GOT TO REALIZE HERE IN UTARD THEY SHOOT AT EVERY MOVEMENT!!!

SOMETIMES COVERALLS,HAT & SHOES AIN'T ENOUGH ORANGE,LOL!!!

I'LL BET THE SPEEDGOATS COULD SEE THEM FOR MILES!!!

THE ONLY bobcat THINKING THE L.E. UNIT PERMITEE'S ONLY CARRY ORANGE IN CASE THEY SEE AN OFFICER!!!

i've been hunting in colorado all my life and the law states that when your out in the field hunting you are required to wear 500 sq inches of blaze orange. now its not required to wear 500 sq inches when your taking a picture

I think there has been enough examples and eyewitness accounts to show that complilance with blaze orange requirements is a problem. I just wonder why some choose to ignore this law or thumb their noses at it when DEER DON"T SEE COLOR!!!!!!!!!!

DUH!

>>DEER DON"T SEE COLOR!!!!!!!!!!<<

Not quite true. That was disproven about 15 years ago. They just don't see blaze orange as the same color humans see it. I even watched them do the tests on whitetails at the university of GA. If you'd like I can email you the article I did on this for Outdoor Life in the early 1990s. -TONY

I know when I'm walking through the woods and I see blaze orange, it catches my attention and turns my head. Especially the quantity required as in a hat and a vest. I'm sure many of you out there, not just me have had deer and elk walk within yards of you while wearing blaze and they don't seem to even notice. I don't need a study to prove that to me. I'm sure you have experienced the same thing.

COUGH IT UP Browtine!!!

O.K. MR. Tine!!!

THE TIME HAS COME TO SHOW US YOUR TROPHY ATOP THAT HUNTING RIG WITH RED BLOOD RUNNING DOWN THAT WHITE PAINT!!!

DID ANYBODY WAVE AT YOU AS YOU WERE CRUISING DOWN I-15???

ANY FINGERS,LOL!!!

THE ONLY bobcat WONDERING IF I'M GOING TO HAVE TO GET ME A RIG LIKE YOURS SO I CAN GET A TROPHY LIKE THAT???

LAST EDITED ON Aug-07-06 AT 06:11PM (MST)[p]You didn't read what I wrote. :)

You said DEER DON'T SEE COLOR! That is the part that isn't quite true and perpetuates the ol' belief that deer see in only B&W.

Deer have what is called dichromatic color vision, i.e. cones in their eyes that can accurately discern colors as the SAME ones we do from the middle of the light spectrum on down into the UV waves. What they lack is the THIRD color cone humans have (trichromatic vision) to see from the reds and oranges up into the infrared part of the spectrum. IOW, they see COLOR mostly like a human who is somewhat color blind to reds, i.e. can't see red in a stoplight but can see the yellow and green.

Back to blaze; deer see it more as brown/tan, depending on how bright it is. BUT...if it contains any UV brighteners at all, either from the dyes or from certain laundry detergents, it will have more of a bluish-white hue somewhat like we see when blacklight shines on white objects. They see this because the excess of RODS (these are what provide their excellent NIGHT vision)in their eyes compared to ours allows them to see farther down into the UV part of the spectrum. We can't see UV waves at all, except when aided by blacklight.

So now you know why deer walk close to you. ;-) -TONY

RE: COUGH IT UP Browtine!!!

My buddy and I argue all the time about deer seeing orange. I believe what deer pickup on is movement and the human siloutte. I usually just wear my orange vest. My sleeves and pants are usually dark color, so it breaks up my human silhoutte.

In fact, I usually wear seperate shades of camo when bowhunting. Pants are one shade, shirt a different shade. I think it's more important to break up the siloutte. I think one single shade causes the human siloutte to stand out more so to deer.

RE: COUGH IT UP Browtine!!!

LAST EDITED ON Aug-08-06 AT 09:51AM (MST)[p]Brian,

I agree. Movement -- and of course, scent -- are the two worse enemies of the stealthy hunter. In reality, I don't think any color, regardless of how garish, will alert game as long as it's sitting perfectly still. But if it is in sharp contrast with the surroundings as game animals percieve it, the slightest movement might send a critter to the next zip code in one big hurry.

In reality, hunters often make poor choices when picking out camo if the patterns are small and mostly the same color. While such patterns hanging on a clothing rack LOOK like they would blend in with a certain terrain, one needs to stand off at a distance to see if they block up and appear more like a solid mass than the preferred broken up outline. I think one of the best patterns for this is the stuff sold by ASAT. It is a very large and bold blend of shades of brown.

Incidentally, what I wrote above in regards to dichromatic vision applies to most game -- the ungulates, feline and canine. It also includes horses and cattle. But, the avian critters, including the wild turkey, do indeed see the entire color spectrum, including quite a bit of the UV part. -TONY

RE: COUGH IT UP Browtine!!!

There are some even-keeled and worthy comments about "after the harvest" photos which I neither disagree with or discredit.

IMO, the real issue is the folks who disregard the "Orange" rules in general, which I perceived to be the context of the original poster. I've glassed well-armed hunters at a distance wearing "Blaze Camo" (which is strictly prohibited in Colorado) and/or wearing no headcover (again prohibited).

Are not these hunters blatantly disregarding game rules in the same manner a poacher would be?

I'm not speaking conversely with any of the previous posts but I figured I'd throw something more to debate out there...sorry.

RE: COUGH IT UP Browtine!!!

I really dont understand why you'd take the orangeoff for pic's. I have pics of me wearing the same NRA orange hat from the time I was 12 when I shot my first deer up until I was 19 or 20, wearing the same hat in the pics. I'm proud to wear the orange and dont look at it as ugly or embarassing. Its part of my hunting "uniform" and I'll always wear it. Safety first!
