2011 started off with a bang and a tag for the Dutton early rifle hunt.. I want to thank Doug (SlamDunk), Tony (StinkyStomper), for sharing their experience on that mountain. Their help and experience were extremely valuable. I also need to thank Dr. Hunter from this site who shared his bow hunting experience from the week prior to my hunt. Thanks for taking the time guys.

Once knowing I had the tag I posted it on this site. Adam Eakle and I spoke about the unit for hours. He also was a great help and had a lot of information. I spoke to Founder as well who knows the unit and he and I discussed areas that could hold some good bulls.

All of this information came from being a member of this site. MonsterMuleys.com has provided me with lifelong friends and experiences that would have never happened otherwise.

I recieved a PM from Jason (Sniper1). Jason went out of his way to help me with this hunt even driving on no sleep after his archery tag to be there Sunday morning. He brought his buddy Lane with him and we had a great time hunting big stinky bulls.

Now the story.................

Summer Scouting...

I spent a few weekends scouting on the Dutton. My first trip was spent driving the roads and finding canyons which I had heard about. Driving that unit without a chainsaw is nuts... I learned that after my first trip. Also, it rained everyday I was down there.

Fast forward to Sept 15th...

Two days before the hunt I started off glassing. I saw some bow hunters but not a single bull... The day before the hunt I ran into a friend whos boy had a bow tag on the unit. We spotted a good bull and since it was his last day they decided to go after it.

I was hoping that his son would get the bull but they ended up taking a ton of memories as a father/son team from the mountain.

After the morning viewing I went into town for some last minute supplies. I ran into Jake Selby on the road. Jakes brother had an archery tag and had been hunting the unit hard. I had never met these guys before and before I knew it, they had explained portions of the unit along with current elk activity. This chance encounter with two fellow hunters gave me some information on a bull they had been trying to kill. Friday night Jake stopped by camp and told me where they had been hunting this bull. He wished me luck for the morning hunt. Jakes a great guy and a great sportsman. So often people are secretive and short with other sportsman. This year I saw the total opposite of that.

Opening Morning...

I started the first day on the mountain alone. Jason and Lane had just finished up their archery hunts and couldn't be there until Sunday.

First light I was 200 yards from 9 cows and a heard bull. Several satellite bulls and the canyons were echoing with the sounds of rutting bulls. I saw the herd bull and watched him at a close distance for about 20 minutes. He was very tempting and although he was the biggest bull I had seen on the dutton, I elected to let him walk away with his cows. Here is a pic of him through the spotter.

Saturday night was an awesome experience. The bulls were going nuts and I found myself right in the middle of it. Two different 5pt bulls came within 20 yards of me within a 15min time period. It was awesome. They were going nuts and the herd bull from this morning was in the distance with his cows. He moved to within 400 yards and although tempting... I passed again.

Crappy picture with my cell phone but you can see the bull coming in.

Brandon, you are going to drive people crazy with another one of these drag out threads :) Wish I could have came down with Jason and given a hand.

Really... Come on now get to the good part before I spill the beans boss. This to be continued crap is only for them gay azz movies!!!!

utahbigbull,

I should have put you in the first post!! Thanks for all your help as well man.

HorseCreek,

Your in for a good hunt.

So I should have put that the herd bull was the bull Jake told me about.

Day 2....

Jason and Lane left at 2am to get here for the morning hunt. They arrived just shortly after first light and found me on the mountain.

First thing in the morning I set up on a glassing spot and again the bulls were going nutz. Lots of smaller bulls had moved in. I could hear bugles in the background but never could locate those bulls. 400 yards below me was the herd bull again. He was looking better and better. I was so tempted to take a shot at that bull but knowing Jason and Lane were moments out, I decided to let him walk into the tree's again. 20 minutes later Jason and Lane arrived.

We started chasing bugles and called in a couple of bulls through the thick junipers. That was a blast having two buddies there who knew how to call and with all three of us going, the bulls started going crazy again. One of the bulls started running towards us and got pretty close until he knew something was wrong. We looked over a couple bulls but one bugle in the distance stayed out of view. We moved in closer to see if we could get a look. While walking through the tree's, Lane and I had walked right under a 6pt elk shed. It was way up in a tree. Jason whispered "hey, look what I found".. Lane and I turn around and can't believe we had walked right past it. Lane caught a glimps of the bull and he was moving out.

Evening of day 2...

We looked at video and pictures of the herd bull. We wanted to get a closer look so that evening we spread out to glassing points.. As soon as Jason set up he located a cow in the meadow where we thought the herd bull would come out. Lane stayed on point and moved over to where Jason was set up. The bull was pushing his cows at a fast pace out of the meadow down a canyon. Jason and I started a death march after the bull.

A little over a mile passed and we were getting worried we had lost him. Right then we see one of the cows 40 yards right in front of us. We were looking down into a small sage brush flat and she was just feeding. We could just see the top of her back. Just then, right next to her, the bull lefted his head and was looking away from us... 40 yards!

We looked him over and decided he was the one. I set up and took the shot. Sending the bullet right over his back :(... The next three shots connected and the bull went down. Wish I had all the pictures.. but these will have to do for now. The group pics are on Lanes camera.

After the shot we realized we had killed the bull about 50 yards from a main road.. Score!!!

Jason and Lane thanks a million for all your help and coming down. One of the best hunts ever and I am glad you guys were there. Good friends and an awesome wife made this my hunt of a lifetime.

LAST EDITED ON Sep-20-11 AT 08:52PM (MST)[p]Congrats on the bull browtine and don't worry about the clicks on the scope. I pulled out my old trusty .300 Weatherby this year and loaded some Barnes 180 gr. bullets and my gun was off half an inch to the right as well, so I turned it one click to the left, shot it then turned it back. I hadn't loaded a bullet for that gun in ten years, had to use WD40 on my old press to free it up but it all still works.........gotta love that Leupold scope! Now if I only had something to point it at..........

Great looking bull off a dang tough Mountain. Anyone that scores a mature bull on the Dutton get a big "Wahoo!" from me. Anything you get, you've earned.

So IKE?

Does the Gun shooting to the Right Compensate for YANKIN the Trigger?

Brandon,
Great bull...great story. Like Stinky, your pics bring back some great memories of a couple of years back. I bet I can show you your exact kill spot on Google Earth....great spot and really a fun little nook to hunt. I showed Stinky how to do it there and yes, the hikes can be real tread-burners. Glad it turned out so great for ya. Now enjoy the memories eh?
