wyoming 102

NEVER ENOUGH!!
Not many proud hunters who hunted it last year because
not 1 guy posted how it was so I assume alot of 27"
3X3's were taken..... draw odds are suppose to be worst this
next buck deer draw for 102 because of the 31% increase do to the 2nd chance pref/point kept open for ever.....
the area gets cold and windy more than snowy!

Whatever he said! Anyway, More snow this year than in the past 10 years for sure. Things could get tough if the weather does not cooperate. The deer look in ok shape for now.

theres more snow now than in the last 5 years. but don't worry, even with a heavy heavy winter those deer will be fine. The sagebrush is healthy down there. Like the previous years there will be not be any winterkill.

The worst thing for the deer in 102 is the Wyoming Game and Snake dept....

102 is an extremly overrated unit, with that being said it probably is still one of the better units in WYO right now. If I was a non resident I'd just keep buying points and allow the G&F run this unit and others into the ground. Eventually the residents will get pissed and demand reform and then the point holders will be sitting on a pile points and be able to draw a good tag. If you decide to try to draw it expect to kill a mid 170's 4 point, with 5 or 6 nicer deer taken yearly.
The previous posts were correct as far as probably no winter kill (I'm down there every day) but I'll disagree with the snow as I think at best its average right now. Another drought will make antler growth dismal again.
feduptwo

there was a few good bucks killed this year in this unit and i saw a few good ones that we wasnt able to get my dad on. i heard a 240's buck came from here this year also. i am headed there friday to do some looking and wondered if i could get around.

DO YOU THINK YOU ARE GOING TO DRAW THIS AREA SOON??????
LOOK AT THE DRAW ODDS!

I seriously doubt a 240" buck came from this unit. I would agree that a few good bucks came from this unit this past year. But not alot. The weather has been unseasonable warm the last couple of days and the snow is melting rather quickly. Your biggest problem will be staying on the very greasy roads caused from the run off. Snow or rain mix friday and saturday according to the weather channel. Take a shovel. Good Luck.

Not necessarily true. If a person didn't apply and receive a preference point last year, the drawing odds will be so steep that you will be looking at less than a 0.5% random draw (regular tag). If a person is 1 point behind, they will probably never reach the top point pool in area 102 (unless the hype fades and the masses move to the next "top pick").

All of this gloom and doom I hear about the Wyo point system, how nobody will ever draw, blah, blah, blah...

Will somebody please explain to me how Utah's works so that it is better? Or is it even better? I just know that on this site, I have never read "oh, you will never draw in Utah because you didn't buy a point in the beginning" I just hear that about Wyo.

This is my post

I've just pissed in my pants.......and nobody can do anything about it.

Utah's system is a bonus point system where every unsuccessful year in the draw gets you an additional chance (point) at a low draw number in the following year's draws. Also, since it is a bonus point system, a person could theoretically draw a tag with any number of points (even zero).

Wyoming's system is a true preference system where 75% of the tags go to those with the most points. 25% of the permits are given out in a random draw with no respect to preference points. In areas like 102 for deer, the draw odds were 2% for regular and 5% for the special draw. If you are 1 point behind, there are now so many people ahead of you, it is statistically improbable that you will ever reach the top point pool in your lifetime.

Hope this clears things up a bit.

Onthehunt!I find it very ironic that you(of all people)would be telling someone else to "Take a shovel"!Do you even own one??Or are you still digging yourself out with a hammer??

Nontypical! Get the facts straight, it was a 2 1/2lb. hand sledge. And it worked very well!!!

Dwalton, I think you're wrong about Utah. It is a preference system where those with the most points in a draw get the tags, unless there are more applicants than tags, then they are drawn only from that group of applicants, AND THEN, they draw a percentage, I believe 25% of the total tags for each hunt, without regard to points.

I could be wrong too on some aspects, but I do know that UTAH is a preference points state, not a bonus point state.

I think WY's point system has issues. My son just turned old enough to start buidling sheep points but he likely will live all his life in WY and never have a decent chance of getting a sheep tag as we old boys are so far ahead of him on points in their system. Sure worked good for those who got points within year one and two but not much of a way to encourage young hunters! Bonus point systems seem more fair than these heavy handed preference systems especially to keep the younger generation involved.

My buddy killed a very nice heavy non-typical in 102 in 2006 season but that said he scouted very hard, got lucky, fought big crowds, and said the unit is over-rated.

Just another opinion.

Every draw system seems to have it's advantages. Guys that have max pref pts like the pref pt system because they are on top of the list to draw a tag. Guys with few pts or are just getting into the game have very little chance of catching up in tough to draw pref pt units. That is what happened in Colo's 2, 10, and 201 elk units and people that are just starting out will likely never draw those tags with the present system.

There are so few Wyo sheep and moose tags issued and so many applicants that high pref pt guys filter through the system extremely slowly and there is little to 0 chance of drawing a tag in the regular pool with all applicants. It is a real bummer when young kids will likely never have a chance in their life of drawing those tags.

One of the best features with the pref pt system in Colo is you can pretty much tell which year you will draw what tag. Point banking somewhat screwed this up last year but for the most part you can still plan a particular year you will be hunting Colo elk, deer, or antelope. The pref pt system works very well for hunts where a lot of hunters filter through the system but is horrible where there are few tags and lots of applicants.

Colo's bighorn sheep, goat and moose are a little different and guys won't have a chance to draw one of these tags until they have 3 pts. Once you have 3 pts your name is put in the hat 1 additional time for each year above 3 you don't draw. This system works pretty good in units with few tags and gives guys that have applied more years a better chance of drawing.

UT's and NV's bonus pt system is pretty good because everyone has a chance to draw. The more years you apply the better your chance. With the present system in UT there are so few nonres tags issued for the premier deer, elk, sheep, moose, bison, and mtn goat units that guys just starting out still have a really poor chance of drawing. UT segments applicants into bonus and regular draw pools but in the case of bison, mtn goat, and sheep there are 0 to maybe 1 or 2 tags handed out to guys in the high bonus pt pool.

With that said I really think Wyo's pref pt system works great for deer and antelope but not for elk. Most Wyo deer and antelope units are fairly easy to draw so hunters will filter through the system pretty fast. Obviously there are exceptions like 102 and 128 deer as well as 60 and 61 antelope that may take a lifetime to draw even with max pts!

The Wyo elk draw may be a once in a lifetime deal for a majority of the units because there are so few nonres tags handed out.

One thing that you need to remember is that systems and other things can change! Charging $75/yr to apply for Wyo moose pref pts is an example. In fact, I've heard rumors of Wyo nonres moose tags going up to $2,000 in 2008! It is getting so expensive to apply for nonres tags you may want to think twice about how many tags you apply for! $75 to over $100/year per state or species really adds up over time. One thing to consider may be to go on a self-guided Alaska or guided Canada trip for the price you will likely pay down the road for all the applicantion and bonus/pref pt fees! I know there are several species and state's I have quit applying for in recent years because it just isn't worth it!

I agree with feduptwo, this unit is soooo over-rated right now. It was good 5 years ago, but that has changed. Most people can plan on a 20" 4x4. Amazing what a little publicity will do to a unit and the draw odds.
