The thurs. before the utah archery opener, i spotted a real good 28" 5x5, hanging out with 5 other bucks, in a spot that wouldn't be too difficult of a stalk. Sat. morning comes, i sneek into where they had been bedding, well before first light only to sit well into the early afternoon, with no visitors. For the rest of the week I searched not only for those deer but for anything that would come close to the biggest of that group.... Nothing, nada, zilch....bummer.
Then this past Sat. morning, a bit tired of hiking and coming up with little bucks, i decided that i would sit in a spot that i could watch the entire opposite side of the mountain.....there they were, one buck turned into 3 and then 3 into 6 and the big boy was there, they had moved about a mile south of where i had seen them on that thurs before the hunt. Now they were in an area that was nasty, no easy way to do this stalk. I decide to go back to camp, eat, rest and just go over the impending date with the buck.
2pm comes around and i start down the mountain, going down a face that wouldn't allow them to see me, or hear me. I wanted to do this right, even if it meant going an extra mile out of my way. Well once i get into the bottom, nothing looks the same and all the reference points have gone away. So i take a guess and up the other side i go, well i figure it out and even though i started up the wrong avalanche chute, i get to kinda where i think they were feeding that morning. I've got great cover, and the wind is perfect....all i need now is the bucks to come out to feed.
30 minutes later, here comes an 18 inch 2x2, feeding out into the chute 60 yards away. BEAUTIFUL, now its just a matter of time right! Then a little hard horned spike, and i can hear the rest of the bucks in the quakies above me to the right at 50 yards, but i cant see them. Plenty of time right? Well the trail that the 2 point is on goes 10 yards above me and I'm ok with that, he'll never see me and the wind wont carry my scent to him. Well at 35 yards, he hears me adjust my ankle, for it were killing me. He's looking, but i aint moving, he keeps feeding, but he gets off the trail he's supposed to come across and starts feeding down to my left. 20 yards.....15 yards.....10 yards, all the while he'd look over at where he'd heared something, but he'd go back to eating.
All the while this is going on I can still hear the other bucks just slowly moving in the quakies, but i cant move my head to look over for fear that the little buck will see the movement.Well as they say in the bow hunting world, if you dont like the wind give it a minute it will change....just as i felt the wind off my back, that little buck blows a giant snort and bails off the side of that hill and all the other bucks explode from the quakies, and back into the timber, never to be seen again............i hate little deer!!!!
Sorry if this was too long, i just had to vent, and tell a pretty fun story about last weeks adventures. thanks for reading.
