Colorado Unit 61

I finally have enough preference point to draw for a first season 61 bull elk hunt, but I am having a difficult time deciding if I should go first season and hunt the short 5 day season or go second season where I can hunt for 10 days and have all that time to try and locate a nice bull. I understand the end of the rut will still be going on at the beginning of 1st season but does that out weigh the extra days you get in the second season? The hunt cannot come soon enough and need to decide soon as the deadline is coming quick. Any help or input would be greatly appreciated, happy to be part of the MM family!

Do you have 10 days to spend? Or only 10 days during the second season?
If I had what ever 10 days I wanted, this is how I would do it.
I would be in the unit 5 days before the hunt started and I would scout day light till dark every day until I found the bull I wanted or the season began. I believe that in 5 days of serious scouting I would find at least one bull that I wanted to go after. If I happened to find him on wednesday or thursday I would watch him every day and then plan on killing him on saturday morning. The rest of time I would get my meat out and relax in beautiful country till its time to go home.

Perfect answer sjhgraysage!

Scouting days are more important than hunting days.

Let me guess, you drive a 1 ton with oak trees for smoke stacks, 12" lift kit and 40" tires to pull a single place lawn mower trailer?

Plus one to sjhgraysage post. I replied to your same post in the Colorado forum. Pretty much to same opinion and/or response as rsjhgraysage reponse here. Good luck.

I really appreciate all your guys help now that you say that it makes a lot of sense and that is how I'm going to go about hunting 61 this next fall. I'm already getting excited and will hopefully have some pictures to be posting! I'm gonna give it hell and see what happens... Thanks again! Anyone ever hunted 61 1st season! Here recently? Any luck I would love to see some pictures!

I drew the first season rifle tag in 2005 and then I was able to get a land owner tag for the first season rifle in 2011. 61 is a great unit and alot of fun. The bull I shot in 2011 is a little better than average for the unit but I was on private land. PM me and i'll give ya my phone number and I will be glad to tell ya what I know. I would go with the first rifle hunt. Unless you bow hunt that is. If you had the time I would bow hunt it.

First rifle is a great tag, the archery tag is one better!! I had an archery tag a few years back and it was the best hunt ever! Helped a friend during 1st rifle 3 years ago and saw a ton of bulls and not many hunters cant go wrong with either . if you need some help with the area drop me a email and we can talk I spend a lot of time up there each fall
