Are there any specific techniques for hunting waterholes? Are they generally a good place to hunt? I have a general understanding of wind direction, but how about things like what times of day will be more productive? How long will deer generally go between drinking? Thanks for any insight you might be able to give a newbie.

I can assure you this much, don't ever discount hunting on waterholes for ANY time of animal in hot dry weather at ANY time of the day!!!
You'd be amazed at what comes in for a drink when he assumes all the hunters are back at camp taking a power nap!! ;-)

Depending on your area, out here in the rocky mountains the deer seem to rely less on water holes the later in the fall it gets. This is probably due to the moisture on the browse and the availability of ground water, snow, puddles, etc. Big mule deer bucks become very secretive with their habits once the velvet is off and tend to hole up during the hunts, so waterholes are seldom and option in the mountainous terrain during the fall.

depends on where you are hunting, but i have found that where i hunt, the bucks will water before light, around 10, around 2, then right before shooting light is gone. my buddy missed a big 4 point on a water hole at 10 in the morning. if it was me i would find the animal's access point and set up a good shooting distance away. then wait and wait and wait. big bucks only need to water 1 every 2-3 days.
