i've been chasing bulls for the past 2 weeks and the area is packed with sign but they just aren't talking. does anyone have tips on hunting bulls when they arent talking.

When my brother and I have had that issue we stick to cow calling a few calls every 10 - 15 minutes or so... Make sure you are paying attention to your wind as we've had quiet bulls sneak up down wind with out making a sound.... It's hard to be patient but that's hunting.

Find a high point and glass. Find where the elk are heading morning/evening and be in their path when they get there. Sit water ALLDAY. Bulls need to cool off and drink more than usual during the rut.
If you're sitting in camp during the day you're wasting valuable time. Some of my most productive times elk hunting are n the middle hours of the day.

I agree with you about hunting the middle of the day but wanted to hear how you hunt it during the day. Obviously glassing becomes less effective. What are your mid day tactics if you are say on a LE Elk hunt this next week and it is the middle of the day?

He answered that already Greendrake. Find a waterhole with lots of sign and sit on it if the elk are being quiet. I myself do this from mid morning right up until dark alot of times on really hot dry days, almost everytime an elk will usually show up at some point, might not be the one you want, but at least its an elk.
If the weather is wet, then obviously get after em!

If I don't go the water route, I'll ease in to areas I know the elk like to bed in. The only way I'll move in on them is if I see/have a great opportunity. Otherwise I'll play the wind and have a seat. You'll be amazed at how active elk are during the day, especially if they are rutting. Even when its hot as hell they gotta get up and stretch their legs a few times. Sit tight in those times and listen.
We killed my uncles bull on the Dutton a couple years ago by locating the herd mid day. Glassing mid day is tough most of the time but I was able to sit on a South facing slope and pick apart the timber across the canyon (North slope). We then made our plan of attack.
Don't give up and NEVER go back to camp this late in the hunt unless you're out of food/water or need to sleep.
Good luck!

We do setups every couple hundred yards. Arrows nocked, shooting lanes etc. We start cow calling softly at 1st, then get pretty aggressive. Cant count the times a Bull sneaks in silent. Nothing is a sure fire method, but get out there and have a good time. Let us know how it goes. Tony

Hot Midday's I try and find the darkest timber that I know hold elk (bedding area)and I creep into it 2-3 steps and glass for parts of a elk.
blow a cow call softly, you will sometime catch them turning to look at your sound or hear them call back.

A heavy used waterhole is tough to beat.
