State Game Director Accused Of Illegally Killing Deer

LAST EDITED ON Nov-28-07 AT 01:39PM (MST)[p]As the story reads, if true, I hope he is treated like any other hunter who unintentionally violates wildlife regulations.

He sounds like a standup guy that made a huge mistake,im sure he will pay for it too, I hope he doesnt lose his job.

LAST EDITED ON Nov-28-07 AT 02:05PM (MST)[p]He needs to learn how to read his GPS. Or how to enter public land. He sounds like a standup guy and I hope it works out for him.

I dont know, on sept 24, 2007, I watched and took pictures of a NMGF officer drive a buck with his personal truck cut him off and then shoot him from the cab of that truck. this is not a made up story I HAVE THE PICS. When I reported it, they didnt even call me back for several days and then when they did they informed me that "the warden was going to very upset with me and probably sue me" Is this the warning they give everybody that reports a crime? They then asked if I could bring the pics to Albuquerque, if it had been joe six pack they would have moved heaven and earth to go get those pictures. I have the pictures I have the taped conversations, I just dont have much faith that they are really "stand up guys" It seems like the crime is a crime if they have a problem with the person.

Take it to the media SoS or the governer, sounds like some are willing to try and whitewash you.
As for the original post, I dont know how anybody can say that dude is "a standup guy" by reading the short, vague article. If it is that cut and dry the dude should be in some hot water (ticketed and severely reprimanded ESPECIALLY because of his position).

im not sayin he should'nt pay the price. I just hope they dont go over the top just because of his job. He should pay the same price as you or I, if we made the same mistake. You can bet the anti's will want his job.

Agreed...

As for his statement:

"I have cooperated with the investigation and I will accept the consequences of my HONEST mistake," Director Thompson said. "I APPARENTLY used an INCORRECT ENTRY IN MY GPS unit while conducting my hunt, but that is no excuse, and I expect to be treated like any other hunter who UNINTENTIALLY violates wildlife regulations."

I wonder if he is being treated the same as other hunters who make honest mistakes, that apparently have a lapse in judgement and that unintentionally violate wildlife regulations? The directors statement, to me, seems like damage control. I would much rather hear him say that he simply screwed up and that he will face the consequenses just as any hunter would, regardless of intent.

Here is another question, if New Mexico law does not make allowances for lack of intent then why would he state that he wants to be treated like any other hunter that unINTENTionally violates wildlife regulations?

I can't believe this story doesn't have a hundred posts already? I guess you have to be an outfitter or a regocnized name on MM to crucified by the internet heroes.....

Well, I made a post over on the bowsite about this. I think there are many reasons why people do not comment on it. Personally, I think a lot has to do with people's fears of their applications being lost, not getting drawn, etc. This may be true or false, or perhaps, this guy is salt of the earth and did in fact make a mistake. Or perhaps, we all know that lines can get blurred when distinguishing between

For me, I call the BS card. If you look at the G&F website, the story is updated. Apparently, he turned himself in AFTER he shot a deer AND AFTER he was spotted by an outfitter AND AFTER the landowner notified G&F. So, I have a couple of questions, #1 Did he really turn himself in? #2How can you punch in the wrong codes on a GPS? (especially in this day and age of digital maps)

I would like to know the full story because I am sure that we are only hearing some of it. It would also be interesting to read the report of this as well.....isn't that public record?

What about outright, blatant dishonest mistakes Drum?

Should we be hearing about those too?

Hmmm....

A person in a position of trust should not be treated like anyone else. He/she should be accountable to a higher standard than anyone else. He/she should be more careful than the average Joe not to break th rules. Consequences for breaking rules should be higher for such a person. NM is pretty light on hunting violation fines compared to other western states.

I can sympathize with this guy. I have unintentionally found myself on the wrong side of the fence before. This year I accompanied my brothers on their hunt and while hiking into an area we found ourselves on the inside of a fence we never crossed. The fact is, some of these ranches are so large and neither the LO or the public is really clear on boundries. While some states differ on laws about posting private, I think it should be a universal law that the LO clearly mark their property lines if they want enforcement officers to enforce the No Trespassing laws.

Unfortunately, this guy will probably pay dearly for his unintentional mistake.

Oh, and I too can't believe the MM angles havent hung this guy out to dry.

I know this man personally, and can attest to his honesty, and genuine personality. He is a super nice guy, and I can't imagine he would do anything unethical intentionally.

Try telling the guys that own Ramah Lake that. We leased our lake to the state for 25 years for a set price, and for some of the general work to be done. From the beginning and for the last 20 years of that lease the NMFG has violated the contract by not doing what they had agreed to do, leaving the responsibility to fall on this small irrigation Co. It has cost us more to do the work that they were contractually obligated to do than we have ever received in lease money and is this "honest" man concerned about honoring that contract, or reimbursing us? We asked and the answer is NO. I can give you a long list of Irrigation Co. members that are not nearly as impressed with this man as you. In fact they feel the exact opposite. Maybe if he were are personal friend we would be treated differently, but I can guarantee you that as the majority share holder in that Co. that lease will never be renewed and that's to bad because it provides some of the best fishing to the general public in the state. We just can't afford to do business with the NMGF.

Hang him!!! True, anybody else would hang. Isn't it the hunters responsiblity to know where you are at....no excuses. I don't buy is dumb story about the GPS either.

Thank you Elmer for pointing that out.

His actions should be the most accountable of anyone in NM. Therefore if guilty he should definitely lose his job. How completely ridiculous this looks to the anti's, and if he doesn't lose his job, that's bad for all of us.

Oh, wait, this is NM, I forgot. All bets are off.

ropeinfool, do you really think a guy in his standing would risk everything to Trespass. I doubt it. This guy will no doubt pay for it, or the public will cry favoritism and based on his statement he expects nothing less.

Mike

there al;ways is 2 sides. It's a same sometimes the person never gets to state his side.
