Guys- I need help or research for this unit. Any recommendations or know of a good guide? I will be out by myself as former hunting friend has given up hunting??? Will get drawn this year for 3rd season and will work hard for a trophy. Anyone need a hunt buddy? Thanks

You might want to think twice. There's been a lot of winter kill in Eagle Valley and feeding going on for two weeks. The guy @ the division of wildlife I talked to this a.m. said he thought anyone was crazy to waste their point on gunnison basin units and the areas around Eagle for a couple of years...lots of dead old bucks and yearlings.

Thanks, I will call a game Biologist tomorrow and ask about other possible areas. Thank you

Sniper 53:

I would second that advice probably for most of Colorado at this point. As I recall it takes a lot of points to draw 44 third season. Given the winter, this might be a good year to build another point, get a second choice tag, and check out some country.

I have been to Colorado the last two years, once by myself and once with a partner. I will send you a pm about sharing a hunt in the future.

LAST EDITED ON Feb-28-08 AT 06:16AM (MST)[p]I talked to a DOW Officer about unit 45 an 44 and he said they are finding dead deer everywhere and would not apply for the units this year.

If you are still interested in Hunting 44 next season I am sure you will have good luck. I live in 44 and there are still plenty of deer around but they did just start feeding them this past week in Wolcott and Eagle. 44 is a pretty large area with the westernmost part of it south of Gypsum. They recieve very little snow compared to the parts to the East. I don't get down that way much but I would imagine those deer are doing fine as our temps. have climbed into the 40's and 50's the past week. Around here I have seen a few dead deer and there was a mountain lion spotted feeding on a couple dead ones but overall they are finally getting a break from a long winter.

Not to change the subject too much, but what about the elk
in 45 ? Planning a early season elk hunt with a friend who
lives in Eagle. Guess I'll send a second donation to CDOW.

Thanks
Paul
