Wyoming Elk

I have max points for non-resident Elk and would really like to pull the trigger in 2017, I have only hunted Elk a couple of times, been hunting mule deer for 25 years in Wy, I would like to make it one of those trip of a lifetime hunts looking to do Diy hunt but open to guide if it doesn't have a 7k price tag. What I'm looking for is some expert elk hunters input, units to look at? Input on Diy or guide I'm 55 in good shape but also no my limits. I do have horses but if Diy I would like to stay out of griz country if possible. Thank you.

And looks like you cant do wilderness areas either.

For my personal choice I like the late season hunts..

If you only hunted elk a couple times, I would suggest a few of General Wyoming tags. Especially if you are intent on doing DIY. It'll make that premium tag sweeter and give you much greater chances of best outcome possible.

Look at the Cody area late hunts . if I had max points I'd consider nothing else.

As a NR you'd need an outfitter since there is lots of wilderness area. . it's very unlikely you'd want your horses in that country and you won't avoid being in grizzly country.

With max points I would hold out for a late season hunt by Cody. there are a few units with non wilderness if you want to go DIY. I wouldn't worry too much about the grizz especially if you have horses to get an elk out right away.
I hunted 54 a couple years ago DIY without horses. Held out for a big bull and ended up eating my tag. Could have shot several 300 - 330" bulls though. The migration was late that year and the Bulls didn't move into the unit
Would do it again if I had the points.
