I have thought of putting in for a CWMU, but I have a lot of reservations over dealing with the land managers. Are these units worth putting in for, or are they more hassle than they are worth?

There are a lot of top notch ones out there, but a lot of others are not all that great, and some are horrible.
Do your homework before you put in!!

As stated already. There is some really great ones that will go out of their way and there is some at the far extreme end that will give you horrible dates to hunt and limit your excess to a small part of the unit/land. Do your home work like any other hunt!!!!

NO, I would never risk my points in order to be at the mercy
of a CWMU Operator.

I am not saying they are all bad (they are not). However, too many people base their draw selections on draw averages.

They see a CWMU unit that has easy odds. Then when drawn, can't understand why there are so many problems.

DO YOUR HOMEWORK!!!!!! Most of these units will hold back a lot of info from their public hunters. Remember their not making money off them. The one thing I would do is try and get a look at the area you would be hunting as if you were a paying customer. That way you could go in knowing where you can hunt. Remember you get to hunt everywhere a paying customer gets to hunt and most of these cwmu's will not show you everything. I did a moose hunt last year on a cwmu and I put in for it because of the odds. I wanted to be able to hunt another once in life time hunt in my life time and thats why I did it. The cwmu I was on held back alot of info and limited the area we could hunt by a lot. I did a lot of homework after I drew the tag and it payed off. The same area I hunted for moose I would never hunt deer or elk in.

Thanks for the help, I think I will just wait for my points to build or a little luck on a LE tag.

Deseret is one of the good ones. Deseret is the model of how CWMU's should operate. I have never heard a hunter complain about the way they were treated.

You are treated EXACTLY like a "paying" hunter.
