Here are the deer units with the objective herd size and the
DWRs 2010 post computer model estimates.........
This will give everyone one a look at what objectives are set at versus
deer numbers that should have been on each unit during the 2011 season.

I'm curious to hear what hunters think about the estimated deer herd size
on the unit/or units, they hunted on this year.....
In your opinions, is the estimated herd size on the unit you hunted this
year more than? less than? or about right to what is being estimated?

10,000 Deer on the South Slope?

Prove it!

Hot Dog,Hot Damn,I love this Ameri-can

I thought the same thing on the South Slope.
My boy had the youth elk permit this year (2011).
We spent the ENTIRE hunt on the SS , hiked are azzs off.
High and low , covered a lot of country, SAW VERY FEW DEER!

10K on the SS is one I'm not buying either,,no way!
Same on MANY of the general units,,WAAAY over estimated..

Some of the LE units look right though,,,,,
Bookcliffs a 7k seems reasonable.

I would like to see the count for the zion unit without the pauns deer in that count i would bet its no where near objective

I live in the Zion unit and I have a very hard time believing the unit is over objective(carrying capacity). If there truly is that many deer the objective needs to be significantly increased IMO.
Also comparing the Zion unit to the Paunsaugunt, I just dont see the Zion unit having twice as many deer.
I would like to hear if anyone out there believes the Pauns has half the number of deer than the Zion unit?

9000 on the Pahvant..........um I want those Rose colored glasses they use to count!!!!!!!!!!!!

19,900 deer on the Manti? I would put everything I own up against that number being no where close.

I work all over this unit, from the north end to the south end, and hunt and scout this unit hard every year. There is absolutely no way that number is close.

I agree with TIKKA,9,000 on Pahvant,You're Bullsshittin me right?

GEEZUS!

EDIT:::Werte they counting Pumpkins or Deer?:>:>:>
Hot Dog,Hot Damn,I love this Ameri-can

STTM if they were counting pumpkins the missed that count also, they were low on that count though.....

So do most think that the count is off or that the objective needs to be raised or both? If we are at or near objective in most units then how can we increase our herd size. Yes I under stand that we are still almost 100,000 shy of objective but its largely in the LE units and a few general units.

So now who thinks the people in charge of setting the population objective and counting or "classifying" our deer herds is the problem? These people are still issuing doe tags and justifying it with their population counts or objectives.

Me personally I would like to see an independent and unbias third party handle counts and population objectives. That way no conflict of interest!

I will say it again, I will bet that the deer population in the state is closer to 200,000 deer, probably more like 170,000

Everyone that lives on or around there unit and hunts hard, can tell you that the numbers are nowhere close to being right.

The method that is being used to count deer is not working. We need a better way of counting the mule deer. This is getting pathetic.

Wow!

Maybe me & cantkillathing can agree on something?

Swear to GAWD I thought the Deer Herd was in trouble where I Hunt(And it is!)but I'll admit the Pahvant is in worse shape!

Ya,I know there's a few good Bucks on Pahvant but total Deer numbers are a JOKE!

You wanna see huntin Pressure, that's a good place to see it!

Hot Dog,Hot Damn,I love this Ameri-can

It's there!

8,000 below objective!

Hot Dog,Hot Damn,I love this Ameri-can

Amen to the pahvant numbers. The last two years have been very poor. We used to pass up numerous bucks looking for a chance on a good one. Last year was the first in many years where no one even saw a legal buck. Doe numbers are way down too.

It's amazing how fast it went down hill, I love that place and it makes me sick to my stomach to even go their anymore.

Sad very sad

>STTM, That is the San
>Juan Abajo unit not the
>elk ridge unit.

Well!

If Elk Ridge ain't included in them numbers they are wrong on their counts there too!

Hot Dog,Hot Damn,I love this Ameri-can

Maybe the numbers are correct....but there is way too few deer!
I am wondering if the targets are just too low?
Do these numbers = what we once had, or some new stupid low number?
One thing I know for sure, we have way way to few deer.

I'd like to see the numbers for South slope/diamond with the Diamond LE unit removed. I think they're padding their numbers on that one.
North Slope is at objective? That's truly sad.

Okay all of you that hunt certain units what would be your best guess on unit that you hunt.

San Juan I believe there is probably around 6,000 deer

Lasal I believe there is around 2,500 deer.

Those are the only units that I frequent on a regular basis.

So Looks to me like a 50% over kill on numbers presented.

Hey cant!

You sure there's 2500 left on the LaSals?

Last few times I've been there it's lookin kinda slim?

south slope way off as are the rest state cut numbers in 1/2 might come close .
+ plus include diamond in vernal south slope.is wrong when diamond is le unit it self. south slope vernal only has maybe 1000 deer left.

north slope that is unbelivble .i spent over 60 days up there last 2 years .helping whith moose hunts have not seen more than 20 deer total .2 bucks small 2points. but buck doe ratio is right. ha ha ha ha

Well why!

They had to add the LE Diamond Unit numbers to the South Slope to make it look good!

Now if Deer can do well on Diamond(It is South Slope!) then they can do well to the West a ways too!

Hot Dog,Hot Damn,I love this Ameri-can

Take a 0 off the end of all those numbers and you might be somewhat close. Like I have said before, why don't we get the dedicated hunter out in the field to help make these counts. We are not getting a true count because they dont want us to know how bad it really is. But we have been telling them for years, getting to the point of no return if they don't soon make some major decisions.

This is a BIG BS on the count on the Beaver Unit, I don't think they can show me 2000, the south end of the Beaver, is just about killed off and this unit could hold 15,000 deer. The Dutton Unit is also in bad shape, their not 1800 deer in that unit and it could handle 6000 to 8000 deer. NOW COME ON DWR SHOW ME THESE DEER, IT TIME TO PUT UP OR SHUT UP, WE NEED TO CLOSE THE HUNT DOWN OR CUT THE TAGS IN HALF AND BRING OUR HERD BACK THAT YOU KILL OFF.

I agree Rperkins, the numbers are so far off it is terrible. We don't need to worry about habitat, we don't have enough deer to eat what we have. Lets quit trying to fool the people that are in the mountains really counting deer and make a plan to shut down areas or reduce tags to the appropriate number of bucks in each unit. How can DWR justify putting thousands of hunters in the field with so few deer. There is many reasons for population decline, but dotting the hills with orange is sure not helping. Anyone on here feel like they saw less hunters this year. DWR said they were reducing tags by 7,000, I for one could not tell any difference.

No way for the Pahvant!! Been around that whole unit 15-20 times the last 2 years from Mid November thru December and that is way off. Spent the whole month last year on my late elk last year, mostly from Cove Fort to Holden and maybe seen 500 total deer. Worst I've seen in my 25 years of hunting!!

I think deer are allergic to the color orange so they all stay on the Diamond Mtn. side.
