LAST EDITED ON Aug-05-12 AT 00:33AM (MST)[p]I got a tag in NM Unit 24 rifle Nov 10-14 for mule deer buck. First time mule deer or hunting NM. Any advice on the unit or how to choose an area or what to look for would be greatly appreciated. I'm used to whitetail in Texas but NM mulie deer has been high on my list. I have researched but its nothing like hearing it first hand from experienced hunters. Thank you.

1. Glass high, low, and everywhere between until you find a shooter buck.

2. Stalk buck considering other deer around him, wind, ect.

3. Kill buck until he dies from it.

Ditch the rifle and use a Rage on your Buck. LOL

Seriously, get out there a day or two before the season, do some serious scouting, get familiar with the unit and be ready for opening day. 10-14 November is a pretty short time, but with some pre-scouting at home online and a day or two prior to the season with boots on ground you should be able to find a good one.

Best of luck!

Not sure what style of hunting you practice on white tails. Mule deer hunting is usually best done by spot and stalk. I always give the same advice to hunters new to mule deer. Read the book Mule Deer: Hunting the Grey Ghost by Jim Van Norman and Tim Carpenter. I have given away many copies to friends over the years and I insist anyone new to hunting or mule deer read it before they can come along on a trip with me. An experienced hunter like you will be ready to go after reading and following the advice contained in this book. It's out of print but used copies are still available at reasonable prices. New copies are collector items and go from $75 to $350.

Never been in 24 but I hear its a decent unit for mule deer. There are coues deer in the unit so be sure of your target before you let fly. I would spend as much time scouting as possible prior to the hunt. Five days in unfamiliar territory is not much time to find and kill a mule deer buck. I've been fortunate enough to harvest several mulies. This year, I drew a tag in NV for a unit I've hunted twice before and scouted one additional time. So I have a total of 22 days on the ground in there. I plan on arriving 5 days prior to the hunt and have allowed for 6 days hunting before I must leave to help a friend on his mule deer hunt.
