Buying a landowner tag

For those of you that have bought landowner tags in the past, does it make that big of a difference who you buy them from? I have been in contact with huntinfool and trailblaze hunting. both were friendly with trailblaze being a little more willing to talk specifics and units. Any one have good or bad experiances with either of these too? I'm just not sure who to go with.

"both were friendly with trailblaze being a little more willing to talk specifics and units."
I found just the opposite to be true.

I purchased a landowner tag through Huntin Fool and it was an overall good experience. They were forthcoming of information on the unit as well as they could be as they had limited experience in the unit. They also gave me a list of hunters that had drawn the tag before so I was able to use them as resources as well. No complaints.

Oilcan, care to elaborate on what you have experianced?

Jbloom i was at work so i didn't have time to explain.

I didn't draw a tag last year so i wanted to purchase a Colorado landowner Deer tag.

I had drawn a tag several years ago and wanted to get a tag in the same unit. The Huntinfool and TB both had a Private land only tag for the unit (not the same property). So not being a unit wide tag i wanted to get some info on the property. The TB tag was considerably less so i called them first. When i tried to get info on where the property was in the unit he got all defensive and said he would not give me the ranch location because he had been screwed in the past by people taking the info and trying to bypass him and purchase the tag directly.
I asked him how he expected me to purchase the tag without even knowing where in the unit it was( and in this unit it mattered )and he said i just had to take his word for the qaulity of the property.

So i called the HF and told him my concerns about being limited to hunting private only. They told me exactly where it was gave me the landowners # to call if i had any questions before deciding.I called the landowner 3 times with questions before deciding to purchase the tag.Like i said that tag cost more but i felt more at ease having talked to the landowner.

Now if you are purchasing a unit wide tag this would not have been a concern but i think TB could have handled it a lot better.

That is great feedback Olican!
While I did not start this post I am very interested in this topic.
Your post really helped me.

THANKS MAN!

I'm not saying don't use TB this was my experience i incourage anyone thinking of purchasing a LO tag to just do there research.

Thanks for the explaination oilcan, that was helpful. I just called about getting a landowner tag for colorado and TB was pretty helpful in going over a number of different units and what to expect in each where HF just kind of told me one or two units to think about. Its tuff to figure out which way to go. Thanks for responding.

I used TB for my one and only landowner tag last year in Utah and overall I was not pleased. The hunt was fine but TB told me I would be the only paying deer hunter on the ranch at the time. Not true. Two others were there. He told me he would send me maps. Not true. He did not return my calls or emails after I paid him to get maps. Finally contacted the ranch manager and he got them to me. He told me he would send trail cam pics of bucks on the ranch as the summer went on. Not true. The other two guys that hunted while I was there had negative comments about TB as well but since I dont know the whole story I am not sure if things went down the way they said it did. Overall the hunt was fine but TB did nothing to earn his money. I will not use his services again.

A LO voucher is a ticket to the front of the line.Period! It does not guarentee you success, or that you'll see a 200 incher, or any deer for that matter. Most these LO brokers oversale and under deliver.I'm sure they are all great people, but they are also salesmen. My suggestion is, do your research, buy a tag, and hunt hard. Asking a LO broker if a unit is good, is like asking a car salesmen if you should buy a car. I have spent a lot of money on LO tags and killed average bucks, and have spent very little money and killed big bucks.

Here is my 2 cents. I hunt Colorado every year for deer. Do your research on your units and the type of hunt your looking for. Once you figure out what your after call all of the brokers and find out who has the tag you want. It doesn't guarantee success and I've seen guys crumble under the pressure of paying 3K for a tag and its 65 degrees and no snow.

Colorado is the best mule deer hunting I have found in the states, that being said there are no guarantees. I use the landowners themselves and Dennis G who divertissements on this site. I met Dennis hunting before he had the business so he has helped me find certain tags when I couldn't find one.

i was a little nervous when i got one last year. i dealt with dennis g and he made it easy as could be and answered all my questions quickly!

I have bought a landowner tag for the last 6 years in colorado the first year was with Dan at trophy chasers, It was a tag for $1600 and I was told I would have access to a certain ranch but ended up that that ranch was already leased out to others. I woudn't do business with him again.
I have had great results going directly to the landowners, once you get to know one in the area, are honest with them and respect their property they will tell their neighbors.
I have only had to buy one other tag from a broker since then. i dealt with Dennis Gillian on that one and he delivered the tag when he said and overall it was a good buying experience for me. I would buy from him again if I needed a tag I couldn't buy from a landowner.
I am a Huntinfool member but it seems that they never get the tag that I'm looking for. But its probably my fault cause I never have gave them a deposit like they ask for at the begining of the year. I do beleive you could trust them to follow though
One thing I learned quickly from trophy chasers is to ALWAYS make sure that the broker knows that you know the difference between a private land only tag and a general tag.
Good Luck!

The landowner is required to provide all his tag holders access to his property as a condition of participating in the program. If he did not and you complained, he could be yanked from participating in the future.

BeanMan, all the brokers or "facilitators" have long since learned how to stay within the regulations. As long as the landowner transfers the voucher directly to the hunter, no rules are being broken. And that's exactly how they do it. The money transfer between voucher buyer & landowner & facilitator can be handled any way they choose. Afterwards the voucher holder redeems the voucher through the DOW and pays his license fee to DOW.

Thanks for the info. I should have stated that the tag was not attached to the land that I was supposed to be hunting and by the time I figured that out the season was almost there and couldnt get ahold of the broker any longer.
It was a good learning experience overall and the trip helped me to get in contact with landowners themselves and I havent had to deal much with the brokers since.

"BeanMan, all the brokers or "facilitators" have long since learned how to stay within the regulations".

I am aware that the, uh, facilitators have "learned" how to operate under the ever so watchful eyes of the CPW without being fined. It fits quite well with CPW's espoused opinion that they don't wish to adopt a "European Model" for hunting in Colorado despite pushing for a 5% increase in landowner tags. Their public relations flack told us at the "Town Meeting" in Grand Junction that it wouldn't actually be an increase. I think he even believed himself. I didn't.

I have got tags from trophy chasers and trail blaze, I would stay far away from buying any tags from trophy chasers!!! long story. 2 years ago bought 2 deer tags from trail blaze and was able to hunt the private land that ben told us and every thing went fine. also had one year that trail blaze could not get the tag we put deposite down for, but he did send back deposit, no problems. My dad has also bought tags from dennis g and had no problems.
