So I found a possible shooter, but the only pictures I got of him were walking away. I heard that you have to be careful of this. The deer seem to look bigger when you are looking at them from behind. Thoughts?......

Yes, they tend to look bigger. I've always heard to never shoot at a deer running away from you for that very same reason...ground shrinkage.

Sorry I'm at work and these are the only photos I have on my phone

just last year I was faced with a deer walking away. I glassed him from about 1000 yards and thought he was a monster! walking away. I did not spend much time behind the spotter, just enough to know he was big and I needed to get closer. I ran down the hill and came up on him at about 300 yards. now I got a better look from head on and sideways. this deer was very nice, but not the 200 inch I first thought when I saw him in the spotter.

I relocated 80 yards above him and watched him bed, and continued to further judge him at about 180. he was a very respectable deer, and if you didn't comb over him with a fine toothed comb you wouldn't have known he wouldn't score much over 180. he only had 19 inch beams but the way his g2 went up right close to his base it really shrunk his beams, but when you saw him from the side you would have thought 23-24 inch beams. I had picked up his sheds so I knew not to get trigger happy as this wasn't the deer I wanted. just goes to show you need to spend a lot of time field judging to learn what big deer look like. if I would have went by him walking away I would have shot a great deer, but not the deer I wanted.

"Any thought on the pics?"

If i saw that view in the zone that i have a tag for this year, i'm getting ready to shoot him at first opportunity. :)

When in a really good area and looking for the buck of a lifetime, multiple views are necessary. Some hunts that i've been on required passing 20-40 bucks a day. Sadly, i don't often get into hunts like that these days. That buck is not very wide at all but he's way better than what else i'm likely to see.

Take 20 inches off when you score him from the back and you will be close. If you think he is a 180 class he is then a 160 class type buck. They shrink in scoring but 20" is good rule.

Thanks for sharing the photos. I love any deer with visible antlers above the body when the head is down.

He's got good tine length. He's gotta be 160" even if he's only 20" wide... He's a general season shooter for me. Good luck whatever you decide. :) :)
