How old is this buck? I was wondering if he is young with good genes or old with marginal genes for width?

Not an expert but in Iowa when a whitetail has a narrow rack it generally stays narrow. Sometimes depending on age they will add mass. That deer looks to be at least 4 or 5.

Not an expert either, but from the pictures I do not see a sway in his belly or the look of a big body. I think he is a young buck. 3-1/2 to 4-1/2 years old.

younger buck, his hindquarters are smaller than his front quarters (bulldog look) and also his nose is dished in.
as far as width, he will forever be narrow, he isn't going to suddenly swell to a 30" deer.

This is a cool buck with lots of character. I think he will always look pretty much like he does now but heavier.(but he could be really heavy) Sometimes guessing a bucks age or how much he will grow is just a guess. I think he looks 4.5 years old in the top picture.(Could be bulked up from the rut) But he looks 3.5 in the bottom picture. I would need to see more to make my guess. But he is a neat buck for sure.

Though not in his prime, he's not a "young buck" in my book. 4 years old is halfway to his maturity. I see this buck making it to about 25" wide in a few years, and with that, he'll be a heavy-horned, tall, non-typical with a rack that will likely go 200" or more with inlines the way he grows them... He's one of those that some guys pass on because they're not wide, and then when their buddy shoots it and they get a tape on 'em, they realize how massive they are and how great having so many extra tines is...

I hope he's one you can follow for a couple or a few years. He'd be a cool one to see grow up...

LAST EDITED ON Dec-08-15 AT 08:24AM (MST)[p]he is at that stage where from here on he will put on mass and really get heavy, IMO a guy would be crazy to pass him up next year. I don't think he will make that rack much wider, but he will be a Book buck with the mass and extra's.
