Where I live/hunt it is legal to bait except on public land. I hunt public land and have some really good bucks that are in the area. Whitetails and Mule deer.... They are actually pretty hard to predict. There is one buck that is a frequent visitor to my trail cameras and one great big boy that i have only seen with my eyes once in the past 3 years and only have gotten 2 pictures of him on trail cameras (only during rut where he is cruising for does)

My question is what to use to "lure" these bucks into the area...whether it be during the rut or early season (archery season last from September to January) since I can't use "bait"???

Has anyone ever buried a tub for water source??? there is a creek nearby but it is very steep banks (like 10ft deep)

Any help is greatly appreciated.

"Hunting over bait is defined as the placement and/or use of bait(s) for attracting big game and other wildlife to a specific location for the purpose of hunting. Baits include but are not limited to grains, minerals, salts, fruits, vegetables, hay or any other natural or manufactured foods. The designation does not apply to the use of scents and lures, water, food plots, standing crops or livestock feeds used in standard practices."

I wouldn't bury a tub, it may attract deer but there is already a water source there. They don't need "large" sources, any trickle is all they need. That would be a lot of work for a good chance of disappointment.

As for other things you can try the doe in heat scents and other varieties. My Dad and I have had unpredictable/occasional success with those scents.

White tails in the rut can roam/cover a lot of ground. We found its best to sit in a good spot and just wait them out. Sooner or later a big buck will come by. Granted this is in the woods of Northern MN but can glass from a good vantage point out west doing the same thing.

Alfalfa hay bales. If you have time, like now, throw up a free choice feeder. Once they find it, they'll use it. Alfalfa first though.

Second thought you could plant a few apple trees in the area. :D

My nephews put in a water pool(filled it with water a couple of times) in AZ one year during archery season, because every tree at the water hole had a tree stand already in it, They set up a ways down the trail(off to one side in the woods)caught them bulls that was coming up to the water hole that smelled the water and killed a nice bull on the 3rd day. So It can be done.

Doe in heat dripper and rattling horns during the rut.

I use hay feilds/corn feilds/ and other food sources for bait. So I use the natural food source as a bait and just figure out the deer pattern

LAST EDITED ON Jul-03-16 AT 12:51PM (MST)[p]I haven't had good luck with mule they are not as predicable as WT. Just hunt that bad boy.

use a trophy rock and get it our there now! once they find it they will keep coming back to it all year. and make sure you have your camera on it and a stand about 35 yards away !!

LAST EDITED ON Jul-09-16 AT 07:19AM (MST)[p]probably Hunting western Kansas WT set up mock scrapes(now) for whitetail near stand location if you have to (no trees) "install" a sapling near stand location with over hanging branch. Use scents as far as the MD good luck they wander.....if you do not have a dripper soak a sponge and slightly bury it in scrape.
