Sorry if this topic has already been discussed, but i was curios what fellow hunters thoughts were on this topic!

If a buck is a big 3 point will he always be a big 3 point? I know injures can cause antler growth to vary from one year to the next, but I'm curious as to what others have seen other similar bucks do throughout their life that are not injured. With management hunts allowing for only 3 point only on one side it makes me wonder how many potentially big deer get harvested early in life that may have been something different the next year or the next.

Thanks in advance to your responses!

LAST EDITED ON Aug-23-16 AT 02:15PM (MST)[p]I agree that most of the time they will stay 3 point frame, but there are exceptions to the rule. I have watched a one buck for many years now and he has went from a 4x4 the first two years then a 3x4 then he went back to a 4x4 then finally a 3x3. I have picts of him every one of these years and I have several sets of his drops, same double eye guards great mass and bladed points. really neat how much some of them can change year to year.

I think they mostly stay a 3-point or something close to it. They likely could get some trash later on in life, but most likely would not all of a sudden become a big 4-point. Considering how few management tags there actually are, there's not likely to be many trophies killed all that early.

I think another interesting question is how many trophy bucks die of natural causes/old age each year on units like the Henry's and Paunsaugunt due to low tag numbers..?? How many 8 year old deer die on the Henry's winter range each year..?? How many Paunsaugunt trophies get hit on the road in their winter range..?? Gotta be a few I'd say.

IMO, Ya never know. Some grow forks, others do not. I've seen very few 3x3's that stayed that way for the duration of their lives. There is no way to even put a percentage on it. I've watched only one buck ever that was a 3x3 for 5 straight years. This year would be 6 but I haven't seen him.
