LAST EDITED ON Nov-17-04 AT 06:01PM (MST)[p]We left at 4:30 in the morning and rode in the dark to the spot that we had been watching for elk for a couple of weeks. We rode in the fog for a ways then tied them up. We walked the rest of the way. It was wet and cold so it was fairly easy to be quiet. We were sitting eating a little snack when we heard a cow chirp, it got us a little excited. We couldn't tell how far becasue it was way foggy and the canyon echoed a little. 10 minutes after she chirped we heard a bull bugle. We all thought what the heck is he bugling for but at the same time didn't care because we knew there was a bull in area. We decided to split up. I kept creeping up the canyon while the two other guys went down a little. The elk kept answering then all of them just stopped. I thought they busted me. I stood there for more than an hour in the thick fog. I was ready to walk straight to the last call but I held tight, and I'm glad. I heard lots of noise coming down the canyon and I thought; why is my friend riding down the canyon on his horse? The fog lifted and the heard was right across the canyon from me. There were 5 bulls in the heard of 16 elk. The fog set back in and I made a sneak on them. I got to a 120 yards from them. There was a 300 class bull in the heard but he never presented a shot. My bull came striaght towrads me and KABOOM. He ran 30 yards up from where I shot him and rolled 20 back down. I shot him through the top left lung and down into the bottom right .Of course I didn't have anything I should have...like a knife, or panyards, or anything. So I had to call my friends to come over. They helped out a ton.
They wanted a picture of me biting the sack for all of their hard work so I thought it was a good trade.
I was shooting a T/C system 1; .50 cal; 100 loose 777; and a 250 gr Hornady SST. Great bullet I have shot 2 deer and a elk with this exact bullet and not one of them has gone further than 30 yards.
