Looking for some general help on possibly hunting unit 40. Anyone hunt this unit in the past few years? Trying to get some general questions answered. If you do not mind send me a email. We (3 of us) have been saving our pref. points for years and trying to make the best choice possible.

Thanks in advance.

Best elk habitat in 40 is private land. The RWF hunt the best private land during the rut with rifle. The small amount of public land that is available gets lots of pressure and the elk often get pushed back on RWF (that isn't hunted during the public rifle seasons).

I don't get a particular hunting service newsletter but have heard it gives 40 pretty good revues. The only reason I can figure they give 40 good revues is that they just glommed on to a bunch of landowner tags that he are selling for astronaumical prices! If you don't have big $ for a landowner tag and have access to private it can be a very tough hunt. Email me if you want more info.

Quality is better than general areas but is somewhat weak for a limited entry hunt. The ranching for wildlilfe ranches have put way too much pressure on bulls and the qulity has suffered in a decade. Ask any taxidermist in the Grand Junction area and he can tell you. Jim is right on his take.

I can't believe they are offering Landowner tags up to $4000.00 on elk and $3000.00 for late deer when it takes '0' points to draw 40 late deer........??
My Mrs. has 9 elk points and we checked into the landownership-private vs public amount of ground and it looks like most of the public ground is all out towards the Utah desert-er-border.... and a pinch to the south of the unit. Not really much elbow room for hunting and certainly no room for packing in with the llamas for some remote area.....
