What a great Archery Elk hunt I had this morning: Parked the truck at 6am and began the 1.5 mile hike to the water hole that I like. Jumped 8-10 deer on the way in, which slowed me way down. I was totally bummed when I arrived at 7:30 way to late for prime time, or so I thought.
Within 5 minutes of sitting down I began to hear bugles. 2 Bulls to the west, and 1 bull up hill to the south.
They just kept getting closer. Finally at 9:15 am a 320-330 6x6 arrived (I have a spike tag) He wallowed, raked brush, urinated in the pond, drank, and bugled for 20 minutes. He was 10-30 yards away the entire time. He eventually got nervous and walked off.
Within 20 minutes another 6x6 came in with 2 cows. He was slightly larger (330-345ish. He did not spend any time in the water just walked by.
What a great morning! We are so lucky to be able to have these kinds of experiences.
I will get back at it next week, and this time I will take my camera to hopefully capture the events, and maybe a spike will decide to take a drink, but if not I have had a successful hunt.
