Yesterday I finally shot my first elk. I shot a large cow at 378 yards with my 7mm Rem and a 160 grain Nosler Accubond. Perfect results and the Burris Signature with Ballistic Plex worked perfectly.

Only took me around 8 years of hunting elk to finally kill one. Late season antlerless tag and now I can say that the jynx has been broken.

Now more about the story. I shot this elk WAY back in there. She was in a thick remote canyon chuck full of oak brush, cedars and cottonwoods etc. After getting to the elk (which was about 3 1/2 miles from the truck and 1 full nasty mile to the main trail) I realized the predicament we were in. I was with a buddy and he was a lot of help. Thank goodness for a great brother and a different buddy who responded immediately after my cell phone call. After driving for 45 minutes they hiked non stop for an hour and a half to find us.

We had just loaded up hind quarters in our packs and had the other meat in different game bags and started pulling a descending down the hill, when my brother and other buddy showed up. I was so glad to see them there to help. They brought in the old plastic sleds and we loaded them up with meat. Much easier going through all the snow. I really have to learn that elk shot that far in better be a big bull from here on out. I don't want to make that trek again but a big bull could possibly pursuade me.

We had found the elk down lower on the mountain early in the morning but they were headed to the higher bedding grounds. We didn't catch up with them until 6 hours later and I made a successful stalk.

Anywho, I thought I would let someone else know about yesterday's events.

Have fun and shoot straight.

Fire Hawk,

A big conratulations to you. You did it and you did it right!...Elk are where you find them and sometimes you just have to pack em. You will remember this for a long time. By next fall you will have forgotten how hard it was to get out and be ready to do it again.

good job, and congratulations..fire..ya gotta do what ya gotta do, when it comes to hunting elk. again, congratulations..

Congrats on a first elk!

You know, the farther you pack em out, the sweeter they taste throughout the year! I hear you though about not wanting to pack out that far again...that is, unless it's a nice bull.

NICE CONGRATS!

It is refreshing to hear a true elk story etc on these sites! There is so much Horn Porn it is unreal!

Oh don't take me wrong, I would love to shoot an elk with big antlers anytime, but for now, I will be glad to take what the good Lord blessed me with.

I had a great time and I am still really sore. But....that will wear off and I will be ready to roll again soon. Thanks for the words of congratulations!

A few years ago I helped a buddy (the same one who hiked in with my brother) get an elk out of a similar situation. I was so tired and sore that all I could think about was how stupid we were for shooting an elk that far back. Funny how time heals wounds and sore muscles isn't it?

I am sure that by next year I will be ready to roll again.
