Unit 60 how is this unit in elk numbers with it being close to the LaSal mountain in Ut, Do they winter in both state or is it a case of them staying on the same sides of the border, I'm wonder how it does in the elk dept.

It is a very hard unit to hunt. The elk migrate through it, down to Paradox and the hat fields, but that is all private property.I have hunted this unit about 8 years since 1995, and only bagged one raghorn. Last year I hunted 3rd season, and only seen a couple cows and calves. Lots of hunters last year, first time I have seen that many hunters. One camp had a 300 class bull around Buckeye.

Tex
Where are this elk coming from during archery season,Where do they rut at up in the BLM or on the hayfields.Does it take snow on the hills to move them down to Paradox like it does on the La Sal's. Would horses be a help in getting around the private stuff. What did you see as far as deer and numbers. Any help you can give would be appreciated. Thanks

I have never hunted during archery season, but I suspect they migrate to the private property as soon as it starts getting crowded. This is very thick country, and should be a good archery unit. With horses you could go north from carpenter ridge over to sinbad ridge, and a block of national forest that borsers utah CMMU JB ranch, that has very limited access, and little hunting pressure. Lots of does, and forked horn bucks on this unit, and although I have never seen a buck over about 150, there should be a few. From what I have seen,it takes lots of snow to get the elk started down the mountain to the hayfields. There are some that stay low, year round.

Hunted deer 3rd season, 2005. Guys from Wisconsin took 4-5 bulls for 10 guys. They were on quads and foot. Deer were migrating to wintering grounds but didn't see elk, only sign. They are there but with all the junipers, it'll be tough. I had horses but didn't even use them for deer.

These guys hunted outta Gateway, they moteled it and drove their quads by our camp about 1 1/2 hours before daylight and 1 1/2 hours after dark the times we were in our wall tent at those times. Got that from the game warden as I never talked to them.

Joke amongst locals was that utah raises them and Colorado kills them. I'll never hunt deer there again cause of the unscrupulious landowners but it has potential for elk. Check out the areas between LaSalles and Sinbad valley.
