A huge Utah Legend!

By now most of us have seen the pictures of the huge typical buck that has been living out by the Tooele Army Deput. I think I have had them emailed to me at least 20 times. I just heard from my unlce that some teenage kid poached him and tried to claim that he got it on the Wasatch Front. If this is true they better as heck do something real serious to this kid and all those that helped him.

Here is a link to the DWR message board where my unlce heard about it. If this is old news I apoligize I just heard a few minutes ago.

Punk SOB, that is too bad. Its all our infatuations with big antlers that creates these little bastards that poach for bone. Too bad. I hope they hang the little chit.

If he's old enough to "take" that buck,
Then he's old enough to "take" it in jail!!!!

Stupid kid. He actually took it to get scored! Hope they throw the book at him.

Has Cass been in Utah lately? Maybe this was the work he has been trying to complete before his video is done.

That is one legend I will miss . I hope they strip him of his hunting rights and put him in jail . I know no other state can produce such a deer like this not even Canada. He claimed he got it on the wasatch front lol If he posted that pic and got away with it we would notice this legend here .Put him in for life .
Fairwell to one of Utah's greatests.

the little bastard should be hung. May be if we can get the penalties bigger on poachers, people would not be willing to take the chance.
The Curse

If this is accurate, he was obviously never taught any kind of ethics and doesn't deserve to hunt again in his lifetime. This kind of reckless attittude toward game, and disregard for laws, will certainly put a black mark on hunting in general in the eyes of the uneducated public. Unfortunately, we, as true hunters, pay the price for others stupidity. Hang 'em high.

That buck was only 35.5" wide and only scores 190's? He looked bigger than that to me. I guess it is the velvet.

That's sad, and such a shame!

LITTLE 'BASTARD' WILL PROBABLY BE IN CHURCH COME SUNDAY!!!

JUST GOES TO SHOW HOW BLOOD THIRSTY SOME OF THESE 'SHOULDN'T BREED' IDIOTS ARE HERE IN THIS STATE!!!

I'D LET HIM KNOW REAL QUICK HE BETTER HAVE A RICH 'DADDY',BECAUSE I'D MAKE HIM REPLACE THAT BUCK NO MATTER WHAT THE COST!!!

YA,I KNOW YOU CAN'T REPLACE THIS TYPE OF BUCK!!!

IF THIS IS TRUE AND I TAKE IT THAT IT IS,I HOPE THEY PUT HIM IN JAIL FOR 20 YEARS AND FINE HIM 150,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000.00

THE ONLY bobcat THINKING:THIS IS ANOTHER EXAMPLE OF WHY 'STUPID PEOPLE' SHOULDN'T BREED!!!

Coat him in doe in heat urine, then tie him to a stump and let the big guys buddies have a turn with him, if he lives, then let bubba have a turn in jail. That just sucks! If I lived in Utah, I'd be really pissed!

This is one of the most disgusting things that I have heard of in a long time. I grew up in great mule deer country, I spent almost every spare hour up in the mountains. This class of buck is rare and who can put a price tag on him. I hope the judge understands the value of this deer and the crime that this criminal has committed. I think all hunting privileges should be taken for a long time, like 20 years. Plus he should have to pay back the value of one of the pricey auction tags $ 80,000. Next he should be put on display at sportsmens warehouse in Midvale for a few days so we can tell him what we think of his crime. This is sick!!!! Please teach your kids to respect animals and our privilege and right to hunt them... Ken

Is this a verified story? Has anyone seen it run on any of the local news channels? I live here in Utah and have not seen this come up in the papers nor on the evening news. I am sure that something of this nature would definately come up. A few weeks ago KSL ran a story on the big typical velvet buck taken during the archery hunt. I am sure that this type of story is news worthy.

Please post the actual story if you can.

Thanks.

I agree with muledeerhunter1. I think this would have been on the news or some official story would be out. This all could be a rumor?

NBJB

No doubt in my mind that the buck is dead now(see pictures below). I don't have anything concrete as to what happened but it looks like there has to be some truth to the rumors.

What a shame.... I hope they nail the little $@#&%! that shot him to the wall!

I don't know much about this kid that did it, but what made it poaching..?.. was the buck on private ground..?.. or was he on government ground..?...if you ask me just because some one pays $20.000 to buy the governors tag to shoot a buck in December don't make it ethical..?

just a question to those who want to lock this kid up and though away the key...do you watch Hatch's buck movies I do!...oh he was convicted of poaching way back when and he redeemed himself.....Hmmmmm....now he's one of the best buck hunter around!....

The kid shouldn't just get a slap on the wrist but he should be givin a chance later in life to redeem himself, just like Hatch did!...

Sorry' I just don't like self rightious people, self rightious put Jesus on the cross......

Don't get me wrong Manny. I agree with you that he shouldn't be put in prison for life. I think he should pay a large fine and loose his privelages for a while though. The boy does need to learn a lesson and I think an example needs to be made of him as well. I think loosing his privelages for 5 years and a hefty fine (that he can pay himself) is punishment enough.

He is a punk kid and anyone who has kids knows that they will make mistakes. It's possible that his old man never spent the time to teach him about this stuff. It's also possible that his old man taught him all he needed to know and the kid just made the wrong decision. I don't think he should loose his privledges for life. If he did it again that would be a totally different story though. I hope the authorities make sure he learns his lesson this time so we don't have to worry about next time.

I live out in Tooele... just north of where the deer was supposedly killed. Rumors have been flying and they say that Gary Durfee in Grantsville is where the kid took the buck to have it mounted. Anyone know Gary (Taxidermist/Cougar Guide) personally? I met him a few times as he did some bird mounts for me, and he does deer for my friend. I would really like to know how much of that is true, also, the pics above? Where did they come from?

I have received both the live and dead photos from a number of different people. I'm sure they are all over the place by now. I don't know anything about them other than I wish the buck was still around.

Too bad....

That's just sickening.
Even if he's a kid he needs to be taught a lesson about poaching
Throw his little @$$ in juvy.
Teach all those little punks who think they can poach and not go to jail a lesson.

Ok He is dead. His hunting rights should be gone for at least 10 years and he should have over 300 hours community service. What a shame.

NBJB

The thing is, is that most of us play by the rules and it is only a few times in our life that we even have a chance to get a buck half that size. Hunting is a priveledge, not a right. We all work and hunt hard, and some punk kid poaches. I feel he has used up his priveledge and should not be allowed to hunt big game for the rest of his life. I hope his name leaks and he runs into a real deer hunter on the mountain.

Manny,
I'm actually with you on this one. Hell, people need to get a dose of reality. A big buck was poached. Yea, it is a shame. But, I somehow have problems with the self righteous who say stupid things like "Post his name", "hope he runs into a real hunter" or "Hang him high" or some of the other stupid statements in this thread. Fact is: Kids Do Stupid Things. What makes this any different over some kid killing a squirrel with a BB gun when there is no season on squirrels? Both are wrong. Is the fact it was a Big Buck somehow make it worse? The kid should be made to do some community service, made to help out at a wildlife enhancement function, something like that, not strung up on the highest tree by the mob mentality of MM. Actually, why don't some of you local Utah boys actually get out of your armchairs and put some of your ethics into practice. This kid probably needs some real role models in his life. Who here would be willing to do that eh. No, that would be too much work wouldn't it? Yea, Hang EM High probably would be easier.

SO YOUR GONNA STRING THE GUY UP THAT ENFORCED THE FINE HUH???

UP WHERE YOU LIVE,YOU CAN SAY OH HELL IT WAS 'JUST' A 35" BUCK,IT WAS 'JUST' A KID,IT WAS 'JUST' A KID WITH NO ETHICS,35"ER'S ARE NOT THAT COMMON DOWN HERE & NOTHING WILL BRING THE BUCK BACK IF THE STORY IS TRUE!!!

I work at the Deseret Chemical Depot outside of Tooele where this buck used to reside. The live pictures were taken by Geri Lawrence of Tooele. I work with her. She is the government photographer for the installation. She has been taking pictures of this deer for years and we have watched him grow up from a young buck. He was poached just off depot in a hay field after the season was over. This deer was so tame that one gentlemen talks of feeding it Freetos corn chips from 10' away. His nickname was Freeto. Our public relations folks have confirmed with the DWR that the poaching story and what is related in the above posts is true. I believe the pictures of the head and cape originated from the DWR. I will miss seeing him on a regular basis. One note of encouragement is that he was busy breeding a lot of does while in his lifetime and there are many up and coming bucks that will be pretty nice some day. As for what happens to the kid? I just hope justice prevails and he gets a fitting sentance.

In Colorado we have what is called "The Sampson Law" which was named after one of the most disgusting poaching incidents in Colorado history. The fines are greatly increased the higher the trophy quality of the animal poached. For mule deer the standard is anything over 4x4 and 21" wide you get an additional $10,000 added to your fine. Probably not enough but it does make a point.

This just makes me sick. I have a hard time believing that someone with the mentality that can illegally pull the trigger on critters of beauty like this can actually fully redeem themselves. Yes, they can be forgiven but to actually fully redeem themselves it would be very hard because what was taken can never be replaced. It's comparable to murder in a sense. It's hard to replace life! Another thing, once a poacher always a poacher just like once a child molester always a child molester. I think it takes a certain mentality to actually pull the trigger and it's very hard to cure that mentality. The fines and the consequences just aren't stiff enough to deter it from happening again and again. I'll bet if trigger fingers were cut off that would deter it! Or if there was a 100K dollar fine (the price of a governors tag)people would think twice about pulling that trigger. I know a well to do citizen that is also a poacher that was busted for taking 2 good bucks in another state and then bringing them back into Utah. He was fined and had all is hunting privileges revoked for a period of time. The very next year he was busted again because he was fighting with another hunter over a 4 point buck out on the general hunt. It's hard to cure a mental disorder and yes poaching is a mental disorder in my opinion.

I believe it was a bow the kid used for one, did you not read my first statement, Hatch is redeemed big buck guru'.... why not give this kid the benefit of the doubt, if some one thinks that the consequences are not severe enough to deter them a week in juvenile hall or a $10,000 fine does change one's mine rather quickly...they should have to pay the rest of their life?s for it though....

Manny,
The "no accountability" message that your sending the youth that visit this site concerns me. Growing up with or without a dad is not an excuse for criminal behavior. Some of our so called "role models" could be the very reason many juveniles modus operandi seems to be lacking any kind of conscience.
At what age does one get over being a kid? If the accused is guilty of a crime, I say let the courts handle it how they see fit. Until our own ranks refuse to condone such activities, I don't think our courts will ever step up and deter such wanton destructions.
Should the "kid" be strung up by his nards for such stupid behavior? I don't think so, but yes his credibility in the hunting community is gone or at least in my opinion it should be. I've seen some starry eyed cronies place successful hunting guru's on the same level as star professional athletes. When professional athletes get caught using performance encasing drugs they might remain in the profession, but the spotlight generally disappears.
Personally I've found it much easier to forgive poaching crimes that didn't happen in my back yard. It's a lot like a public employee stealing from a government office. We just seem shrug it off as ?oh well.? But if someone steals from your house it's an entirely different story. "Hang em High", right?
Anyway, I'm not being judgmental of the accused kid. Heck, he is entitled to his day in court. I won't supply the rope unless a conviction is secured. Oh... how does one get redeemed? I could use some of that myself!

Thats to bad that was friggin toad . I was thinking 38 inches on him . Hope he the kid gets a good penalty.

Not saying the kid should get off Scott free, nor do I condone his actions, but I grew up in a home that had a Dad who didn't give a rats a-s-s what we did? & I've turned in poachers before but they were adults and I expected them to act as such.....every situation is different, and I don't care for lynch men type mentalities, that's why we have judge's & juries!!!!!

manny15,
Here is quote from another forum on the very topic. The buck was shot with a rifle not a bow and the 17 year old kid just laughs it off like no big deal. There should be some heavy consequences for what he did especially when there is no remorse!!
"here is a little update: the buck was score in the 190s typical. the indivicual ( i wish i could give out his name at this time but due to the investigation i cannot) says that he was by himself and that since he is only a juv he won t get more than to loose his hunting privlages and laughs it off. the deer was shot with a rifle not a bow, and the state does have the antlers and deer in there possesion as evedince and thank all of you for your inpute maybe just maybe the prosccution will see just how dam serious this is and its not just another kid acting out"

Wow Manny,
Are we on a superior morality kick today. I agree that it is unfortunate, but comparing it with murder. Get real. If the life of the big buck is so precious, then it doesn't matter whether it is killed legally or illegally. It's just as dead and just as impossible to replace.
But since it is illegal, it should carry appropriate consequences which unfortunately is not always the case with poaching. However, I'd probably have to draw the line somewhere this side of cutting of fingers.

That is trully sad that the deer got poached, but I think we need to make an example of this kid as to what happens when people poach!

Michael~All Gods creatures welcome... right next to the mashed potatoes and gravy.

30inchbucks,
WTF, poaching is equivalent to Murder? I think you need to re-evaluate your thinking dude? Poaching is Theft. Plain and simple. Justifably, poaching a buck of this caliber can be argued as Grand Theft. To equate poaching to murder is as messed as a granola cruncher saying hunting is murder. It is a freakin' deer man. Not human life. The sad reality is in today's justice system this kid will be treated no different than a juvy stealing a car for a joy ride.

BCBOY,
Can you read? I never said poaching was equal to murder. Go back and read my post again and this time really try to comprehend what your reading before you bust out with your stupid accusations. You're a crack up! Dude! LOL! I'm starting to think your'e related to Napolean Dynamite. LOL!

Throw the fricken book at him.
It would be a good start.
Until when are we going to say
enough is enough?!!
We always wait for the "next"
poacher to get busted huh?
NO! start now! Fine him big.
Let him know that there are
consequences to pay and finally set
the example for the rest of em.
Let him lose his hunting and
fishing privileges for life!
Put him on probation and give
the boy community service!

Feel like argueing tonight or something BCBOY.
I was just thinking how fun it would
be to drive across the border to poach some of
those heavy horned canadian bucks. Probably since
you have so many, it will just help to keep them off the
front bumpers of the native's SUVs. We'll be doing
you a favor I guess.
I can't believe you are defending this punk.

REDNECK... Yah alot. Hang the little f@##$@

Feel like argueing? Maybe. It is the off season now and I've been known to stir the pot at times and play devil's advocate. LOL! Defending tis punk? No way!!! But, I wonder if these same 'rednecks' can show this much passion towards getting justice for a the true scum of earth like murderers or a rapists, because a freakin' deer ain't near as important as human life.

Butler was charged with wanton destruction of protected wildlife. Because the buck's antlers were more than 24 inches wide, the animal qualified as a trophy, making the crime a third-degree felony with a restitution fine of $8,000.

Army depot buck poached

Wildlife enthusiasts have been taking pictures of the protected big bucks on the Tooele Army Depot for years. One person took it a step further and killed a trophy buck with a 34-inch antler spread. DWR officials received a call from the Help Stop Poaching Hot Line on Nov. 30 saying one of the bucks had disappeared. Conservation officers found the animal's head at a taxidermist and interviewed a juvenile who confessed to killing the animal.

Busted in Wyoming

Wyoming Game and Fish wardens watched Ogden residents Scott E. Day and Daniel Fowers raising rifles and looking at deer through scopes and then using headlights to find deer in the dark on the east side of the Crawford Mountains in late October.
When questioned, the men told officers they were hunting coyotes, but they did not have typical coyote hunting equipment and officials decided the intent was to kill deer.
The men were charged with taking antlered deer during a closed season or without a license and taking wildlife with the use of artificial light. In Wyoming, intent to kill qualifies as taking protected wildlife. Each of the men was fined $5,260 and ordered to serve six days in jail.

=================================================================
So tell me what do you get for killing a doe or a fork!!! Who are they (DFW) protecting the trophies for, certainly not the average Joe, why is there a difference between a small buck and a monster buck, because the rich pay big money for a tag!...they don't care about the animal, it's about the money! Again...it may make sense to you but it don't to me, I love monster deer as much as the other guy but it should be the same fine across the board, unless they kill more then one animal...

I think it should be a stiff
fine for poaching. Yes I do agree
with handing out a BIGGER fine
for trophy animals. Trophy's are
a lot of times what these guys are
after in the first place! They just
cut of the antlers and leave the
body in many cases!!

Has anyone taken into account the life of the boy in question, what's his background, accomplishments, upbringing. I don't think the young lads life should be ruined over a stinking deer, big rack or not. If he had killed a doe who would have cared.

The deer had a realistic life expentency of 8-12 years if everything went in his favor. The boy has a life expentency many times that. At least someone may have started him in the right direction(at least he was intersted in hunting) maybe they didn't have the chance to finish the job. There are so many different scenarios that would shed differing lights on the incident.

Was it right...no! Was it his chance to prove himself to an abusive father or possible a chance to fullfill a direction that wasn't clearly defined because of his fathers early passing, Who knows? Until I know ALL the details I will not be quickly passing judgement on this kid. I have rushed to judgement before only to be embarrassed by my lack of campassion.

Fritos, gitos, belitos who cares, I'm sure the deer had no idea what a deer license was or what area he was in, to him dead is dead whether it be legal, illegal, car, disease, accident whatever.

Many on this site have at some time broken game laws and gotten away with it. How many here unselfishly take a youngster under their arm to show them the right way. This kid didn't fail us, we failed him.

The hunting sport we love is destined for destruction if we don't bring youth into the fold of our tradition.

BOB...cat' no body knows chit about this kid yet, I may very well be wrong, but hey most of you guys might be wrong also....we'll see...

Any of you ever read a story about a lady taken to be judged
who had commited adultry. I wonder how many less posts would be here if a lot of us thought back to when we were teenage kids. Probably quite a few less. The kid should be fined, he should loose his hunting privleges for a long time and that ought to be good enough for him to learn a hard lesson that won't be soon forgot.

And that's all I got to say about that! Stupid is as teenager does!
