How will 05 be different?

With the seasons quickly approaching I thought I would throw a post out there to discuss plans for the upcoming season, specifically what will you do differently this year to make it more successful than last year?

Will you pass on those smaller bucks to hold out for a larger one?

Will you shoot more in the offseason?

Personally I'm putting more emphasis on my presesaon conditioning to allow me to hit the high country ready for it, last year I was off my game a little bit.

I don't think I'll do anything much differently. Last year, I hunted a lot, had great success, and added a couple heads to the wall. I didn't take a deer with my bow, I had several opportunities, just didn't get a chance at the one I wanted. As a result, so far this year I've upgraded my bowhunting equipement and moved a stand. All that is left is to continue practicing with my weapons, working out, saving money, and trying to wait patiently!

05 will be VERY different for as after 7 years I finally drew my Bookcliffs deer tag. Planning an entire 10 days of camping out there while hunting something truely nice or unique.

More time hunting (the first time I'm EVER taking a week to go somewhere), more time in woods before season. That is the plan, the success of the plan is in the execution. I've also expanded my hunting horizon to include a bow this year, so I'm looking forward to my first bow hunt.

I'm going to either break the 200" or 30" mark!!!! Doesn't hurt to dream anyways! :)

Well I hope to draw, if not don't forget about the leftover buck tags, a lot of really nice deer in some of those units.

I just want the BOBCATBESS to get lucky on what every he wants!
As for me meat and bone!(never a tiny fork horn though)unless I draw other than CA then its about bone(spread and inches).
And a fair Blackbear(passed on a few early last year!
RACKMASTER

THANKS RACKMASTER!!!

I DIDN'T PULL THE TAG SO MY ODDS ARE STACKED AGAINST ME AGAIN!!!

A RAGHORN DOES NOT EXCITE ME!!!

A 340"+ BULL IS LIKE PLAYING THE POWERBALL LOTTERY WHERE I'LL BE STOMPING!!!

I WON'T STOP TRYING THOUGH,THERE IS ONE SHOOTER ON THE SLOPE,ALL I HAVE TO DO IS LOCATE HIM,LOL!!!

NOW IF I GOT LUCKY ON EVERYTHING I WANTED,I'D BE IN SEVENTH HEAVAN OR AT LEAST IN AN LE UNIT WITH A PERMIT,NEVERS HURTS TO DREAM!!!

I BELIEVE THERE WILL BE SOME GOOD HORN GROWTH THIS YEAR!!!

SO YOU LUCKY S.O.G.'S (SON OF A GUNS)WITH LE PERMITS SEND SOME PIC'S PLEASE!!!

YA,I'M HOLLERING STILL,I GUESS!!!

THE ONLY bobcat WONDERING IF ANY OF YOU LE PERMIT HOLDERS NEED A TRIGGER MAN???(PLEASE SEND PICTURES OF WIFE AND GUN,I'LL DECIDE WHICH ONE I WANT TO TAKE CARE OF DURING YOUR HUNT,JUST KIDDING,I CAN DEAL WITH ANOTHER GUN BUT NEVER MIND ON THE WOMAN!!!)

If I have another year like last season I'll be Happy Enough :) Have a good chance at drawing a Bull Moose tag and a Mountain Goat tag. Might actually hold out for a larger bull instead of dumping the first one I see to fill the freezer. "Might" is the key word. My wife will be putting a lot of pressure on me to hammer a nice young bull for the freezer. :)
My motto is definately "Go Big or Go Home" for a monster muley this year. Got to keep the finger off the trigger on those pesky 170-180 class bucks and hold out for a true Giant.

Heck, I've already been up to Wyo. hiking/scouting on my elk tag and hoping for the 'G' tag!
Staying in good shape for sure helps come day 3-4 of hard hiking/hunting. Still fighting the quit smoking gig.... none some days... a few with cocktails another day!! see-saw of quitting I quess........
Shooting the bow most everyday and took the big gun out jackrabbit hunting twice last winter for practicing on tiny targets at long ranges.........
Always after the big boy but am happy with a mid-range scoring harvest as much as a safe and enjoyable hunt trip.

Hang tuff on the quitting smokes. I smoked for 20+ years and its been over 4 months now since last one. Still want when I have a Bud Lite (BAD). Decided I better start working out so I didn't gain wait from stopping. We have a very small gym at work I hit it at lunch. I'm up to 5 miles on the tread mill in 40 min. and over 250 flight of stairs when I do the stair master in 40 min.

Not a good this year! I usually have a couple tags by now, so far haven't drawn in anything, with a wide specimens of the tags, still some drawings to go.

LAST EDITED ON May-28-05 AT 11:15AM (MST)[p]I need to confiscate all of my Dads ammo until I bring in a size large bull moose. We're not only looking for a hunt of a lifetime, but some antlers of a lifetime as well. I'll be doing less shooting and more packing, but it will be worth every morsel.

This year as for hunting techniques: Scout this summer, have the area photos ready, and be at my best spots before sunrise in the fall.

This year to be different for game I would have to get the Sheep draw. Also a moose draw that's close to home and maybe a Fall Grizwald a little ways up north. If not I'll head to where I can smoke a big bull moose. Hopefully a bull elk over 300, a mulie over 180 (3 over 180 would be nice), and if I'm lucky a couple big ol wolves. A huge Blackie would be nice this spring or fall too.

This year I'm not planning on getting my wife pregnant, so there should be more hunting time!

Dall's sheep in August in northern BC, if I can draw. Alpine muley hunt at the start of September no matter what. Yukon moose in September if I don't go dall's sheep hunting and if the person whose taking me on a special guiding permit comes through. Maybe bighorns in October, again if I don't draw a sheep permit up north. Muley hunting in November for a couple weeks. All of these plans will be thrown out the window, though, if I draw a premium tag somewhere (roosevelt elk or bison in b.c., desert bighorn in the states). And of course I'm not entirely convinced my pass this year is good for this many hunts. :)

Hope everyone has a great hunting season.

Like DallanC I've drawn my Book Cliffs deer tag (muzzleloader) and I have the whole season to off! A little of my preseason scouting has been shortened by my son, he drew the youth elk permit, wait, hunting elk in the rut, this is going to be a great year!!

Smokepole

Dallanc and Smokepole, I also drew for the Book Cliffs deer. For me, the summer can't come to an end fast enough.

I plan to skip the elk hunt so I can focus on scouting the unit. I also plan to put more rounds through my rifle on the range this year. I want to be fully prepared for this hunt so I can take advantage of any opportunity that presents itself this fall.

Good luck to everyone. I anticipate viewing everyones hunting photos this year.

In 2005 I plan on pulling the trigger (or release). I have eaten tag soup the last two years using ever second of the season to find a big son of a beeeeotch that has eluded me. Everytime I think I have him made, he pulls a new trick. Assuming he made it through a relatively easy winter, and nobody poached him, I should have him figured out (probably not but its easy to be confident in June). I saw a few of his genes in a couple of nice 4x4's last year, so maybe the wet spring will make them intersting. I think I killed their old man a few years ago. He was a high 180 with dry conditions. Hopefully they reach their full potential with the green up.

I'm gonna hunt a bunch of the third rifle season with my bow, and if I can't get 'er done, then I will unleash the .300 wby to close out what I hope will be a historical season (my 10th in Colorado). It will be fun to have a new challenge. Might even try to let the air out of a good bull... but thats a lot of BBQ....

Good luck to the rest of you....

i plan on actually having some time to do some scouting, switching back to the rifle this year from hunting with a bow the past two years. i live in eastern wa so the general season isnt the greatest, but there are spots that produce some nice bucks, but i'll take anything legal to throw in the freezer (unless i can find a good one, or get lucky and draw another late deer tag)

Hopefully draw a tag unlike last year. If not then this year we are going to hit the Kaibab for a week. Usually we just go for a weekend and don't try that hard. Getting tired of that. And shoot a lot more this summer.

I am with you on the preseason conditioning. I also want to spend more time prescouting. I do good up to about 1 month before the hunt and then I slack off. It also couldn't hurt to put a few more rounds through my gun this year. Since my largest buck to date is a 3 point smaller than the average 2 point I hope to make this year my greatest. My rule will be anything bigger than my less than huge 3 point.

My plan is to draw a good permit for once.. so I can only hope I guess. I now where I want to hunting on eopening day if I have the right permit. Good luck to everyone.
