I took the old muzzlegun out yesterday and tried out the BH209 powder. I must say I was pretty surprised to see the target after I shot, there wasn't the big smoke cloud after the shots. I shot 11 shot, and never swabbed. It is pretty impressive stuff.
I am shooting a TC Omega, 90 grains BH 209, Winchester Primers, and Hornady SST 300 grain bullets with Low Drag Sabots. These shots were at 25 yards, I just wanted to see what it would do.
This was my first 5 shots...

Then my next 3...

Then my last 3, I decided it was shooting an inch low, so I made the adjustment after the first shot...

I'm feeling pretty good about it. Now we need to get some distance between me and the target and see what it looks like, but my first impressions are that BH ROCKS ! ! !

BH says that 100 grains is 1855fps, so I would say its a bit less than that. I will get a chrono next time I take it out and get the exact numbers...

Recently, I've been working on a hard-hitting load for an elk hunt I have the middle of next month in the Bob Marshall Wilderness Area of western Montana. I like all the punch I can get...and the load I settled on for my .50 T/C Triumph is 120-grains of BH209 behind a saboted 300-grain Scorpion PT Gold (from Harvester Muzzleloading). The load gives me 2,068 f.p.s. - with right at 2,850 f.p.e. At 100 yards, the poly-tipped spire point still htis with more than 2,000 f.p.e. - and the load retains 1,500+ f.p.e. all the way out at 200 yards.

One of the 100-yard groups I shot two days ago (temperature 49 degrees early that morning near Missoula, MT) measures just over 1/2-inch center-to-center. And I shot that group after running at least a dozen prior shots through the rifle - whithout wiping the bore once.

Great powder that delivers great performance. The past two seasons (yep, 2007 as well) I've taken a total of 17 whitetails with loads of BH209 - all one-shot kills, and the farthest any have gone has been, maybe, 40 yards. Most went down pretty much on the spot.
