Last night I joined the club.
I took my first buck with a bow.
Got my Bowtech Pro 40 in April, I practiced constantly out to sixty yards and got real comfortable with it.
For about the last three weeks I've been hunting Columbian Blacktails near my home in Northern California.
My first day out, I encountered this buck with a nice high wide frame, broadside at 40 yards.
Instantly I came to full draw, ready to make the chip shot that I had been making for months.
well, just as soon as I came to full draw, my heart was in my throat.
In my haste, I didn't realize that my peep sight had twisted.
All I could see was black.
I was sick!
This was a gift, and I just blew it.
The buck was gone.
I kept hunting carefully for the next two weeks.
Conditions were horrible, highs of up to 108 and the grass and leaves were as dry as a popcorn fart.
Horrible stalking conditions.
Still, I managed to spot this same buck two more times, but never able to get within bow range.
Last night, after letting the property rest for a few days, I was back at it.
Just near the end of the evening, I was nearly through with the hunt, when off to my left, I spot the buck that had given me the slip.
I quickly ranged him at 58 yards, far, but I had practiced from 60 since I first got my bow and was confident at that range.
I drew back and let fly.
My bow made a funny noise, I think I had brush or grass caught on my cam or something, anyway the first shot missed as he was quartering away.
Now he is curious and quartering toward me, but still unaware of my presence.
I draw again, and carefully center my 60 yard pin.
This time I watch my arrow bury into the buck, just benind the shoulder.
I'm so excited I am shaking.
Meanwhile, the buck, unaware of me and where I'm at, bolts directly toward me at full throttle, nearly running over the top of me.
I stand up and the buck crashes into the brush.
All is silent.
Adrenaline is pounding through my veins.
THIS IS AWESOME!
I've shot many bucks with a rifle, and many much larger than this one, but this whole experience was different.
My first buck with a bow.
No, it ain't a monster, but he will always be special to me.
I'm uncurably hooked.
Thank You.
