My First Buck with a Bow!

Last night I joined the club.
I took my first buck with a bow.
Got my Bowtech Pro 40 in April, I practiced constantly out to sixty yards and got real comfortable with it.
For about the last three weeks I've been hunting Columbian Blacktails near my home in Northern California.
My first day out, I encountered this buck with a nice high wide frame, broadside at 40 yards.
Instantly I came to full draw, ready to make the chip shot that I had been making for months.
well, just as soon as I came to full draw, my heart was in my throat.
In my haste, I didn't realize that my peep sight had twisted.
All I could see was black.
I was sick!
This was a gift, and I just blew it.
The buck was gone.
I kept hunting carefully for the next two weeks.
Conditions were horrible, highs of up to 108 and the grass and leaves were as dry as a popcorn fart.
Horrible stalking conditions.
Still, I managed to spot this same buck two more times, but never able to get within bow range.
Last night, after letting the property rest for a few days, I was back at it.
Just near the end of the evening, I was nearly through with the hunt, when off to my left, I spot the buck that had given me the slip.
I quickly ranged him at 58 yards, far, but I had practiced from 60 since I first got my bow and was confident at that range.
I drew back and let fly.
My bow made a funny noise, I think I had brush or grass caught on my cam or something, anyway the first shot missed as he was quartering away.
Now he is curious and quartering toward me, but still unaware of my presence.
I draw again, and carefully center my 60 yard pin.
This time I watch my arrow bury into the buck, just benind the shoulder.
I'm so excited I am shaking.
Meanwhile, the buck, unaware of me and where I'm at, bolts directly toward me at full throttle, nearly running over the top of me.
I stand up and the buck crashes into the brush.
All is silent.
Adrenaline is pounding through my veins.
THIS IS AWESOME!
I've shot many bucks with a rifle, and many much larger than this one, but this whole experience was different.
My first buck with a bow.
No, it ain't a monster, but he will always be special to me.
I'm uncurably hooked.
Thank You.

You can't tell me this is your first one. You even reloaded your quiver! That is a veterans trick.

Nice buck. Congratulations, you will never forget your first one.

Way to go HH!! This is great news. You should be both proud of yourself and happy with the accomplishment. Thanks for sharing both the story and the pics. I get to start hunting in about 3 weeks and your success gets me fired up for archery season.

Awsome story, Harry! It kept me on the edge of my seat!! Beautiful pics and thanks for including your son. I love seeing the look on kids faces (and big kids)after a successful hunt! Congrats and welcome to the club! When you bow hunt for the first time, your life changes. It's an addiction you won't shake!

Congrats!!!!!!!!!!! The only Bad news is it makes pulling the trigger on animals from now on a buzzkill.Ha Ha enjoy it and go do it again soon.

Congrats HH,

That's a great first archery buck! I liked the story as well...

CONGRATULATIONS!!!
You said it best "..........but the whole experiance is different." I also hunt a lot with a gun, but bowhunting is a different ballgame. It is a rush, no matter what the animal is, or how big it is.
Good job HH. I enjoyed your updates throughout the year, and now your fist buck. Congrats again.

From your pictures it looks like you shot him around 7pm Wednesday night. I am glad to see the bucks starting to come out before dark. The last two weeks it seems like the bucks have not started to move in my area until around 8:30pm, giving you very little time to stalk before the end of legal shooting time. Nice shot. It looks like he might make P&Y also.

Way to go, Harry!!!
Now your hooked and deer hunting will never be the same!!
Rifle hunting will now be just a means to fill your freezer.
Congrats!!!!

Nice -- way to go Harry! All that practice paid off and you did what I expected you to do. I'm surprised he's not in velvet -- did most of them shed their velvet already in your area?

HH,

I loved the story. Reminded me of he first Jack Rabit I got when I was about 9. Laid awake half the night thinking how awsome that was and about making my dad take me again tomorrow.

LAST EDITED ON Aug-05-05 AT 08:08PM (MST)[p]Thank You guys.
Actually I shot the buck last Sunday night.
I put the story and pics together and didnt get to post it till a few days later.
I'm still really stoked about the way it all turned out.
And yes, once you pick up a bow, rifle hunting seems much easier.
What a feeling of accomplishment it is to take your buck with a bow.
Anyway, Thanks again for the kind words.

Just awsome. Hard work and perseverance pays off. I hope to post my first buck at the end of January!

Way to go Harry! Now, If that was a Muledeer I probably would have asked you why you shot my Golden Retriever :(. But that is a damn fine buck! Way to go on your first one man! Now it's just a building block of stones to climb till the elusived 30" buck walks past you and you shake yourself into a coma or somthing ;)

Congratulations Harry!! Looks to me like all that hard work paid off. looks like you found the bullseye just fine on that one! Somehow I knew that you'd take to this like a duck does water. Hope you're planning on getting that young man started shooting a bow as well. If you already have great! Take care and congrats again!

Congrats!! Isnt it the best!! Dont you love A zone?? Weve got the worst hunting seasons in the country as far as Im concerned! But I guess if it were later in the year the bucks would be slaughtered during the rut! Youve really got it bad up there then if your temps were up in the hundreds. Im down in Santa Maria - an hour North of Santa Barbara - and Ive been hunting in about 80 degree weather. Thats a very respectable buck. ANY buck with a bow is respectable with a bow. Nice job!!

Thanks!
I took it to the wire.
Last evening of the last day of archery only.
I had figured that I would have to wait till the end of September when the rut kicked in before I'd get a shot.
Thanks to all for the kind words.

You need to get that buck scored. I think he will go P&Y. That's quite the accomplishment for a first buck!
